Rituals...

Hearkening back to murky house (and 3rd party) rules of yore, rituals are sort of like casting spells "out of your spellbook". (even if you are a cleric...anyways).

So, take alarm. You can prepare and cast normally, or don't prepares and cast as a ritual. It takes 10 minutes and 25 gp.

Could work.

It confuses me a little bit.

So, to cast Alarm as a ritual, it is more expensive and takes longer than preparing a slot?

Takes longer makes sense, but why bump up the "price" by 24 gp? Where's the in-world logic for that?

Alternately, why would a character spend a prepared spell slot on it? Its function seems to be to protect you from wandering monsters while you're sleeping, but of what use is casting it instantly (except, apparently, a savings of 24 gp?).

It's a nice theory, but it needs more work. In the Alarm case, I'd just as soon it ONLY be available to cast as a ritual.

I can think of a few uses in which Alarm would be useful in the middle of dungeon where you don't have 10 minutes. Placing it in a hallway when you're being chased for example.

I have to agree on the more gp though. It seems like for the same spell it should have the same requirements. Maybe it's replacing hand movements or something?

Its a vancian work around: its never worth using a slot for this until it is, so we need another kind of opportunity cost.

Instead of raw magical energy, you use the components...instead of just putting alarms everywhere. But having the 25 gp for both uses probably wouldn't make a huge diff.

We really need to see other examples.

I would guess that you replace the magic that you personally inject into the spell with the magic inherent with things of value. You sacrifice them in order to get the power to fuel the spell since you didn't want to use your own personal reserves.

But out of world it serves a very important purpose: You can't cast infinite of these spells.
