Rod of Wonder?

I'm perfectly happy with the new Rod of Wonder, and also enjoy the fact that charges don't apply. IMC, the group's sorceror managed to find one of these, and used it exactly three times IIRC. He had two very helpful effects employing the Rod during vital encounters, and only one incident of irritating, nearly fatal, uselessness (he grew grass while the party was facing a dragon). With his ratio of success, I was always puzzled by his reluctance to use the Rod, but it wasn't my call to make.

For the record, three of my all-time favorite magic items are the Rod of Wonder, Deck of Many Things, and the Figurines of Wondrous Power.
