[RoEG Publishing] Mortis Arcanum Open Call [reopened]

KingOfChaos

First Post
Due to the fact that many of the submissions we originally recieved for Mortis Arcanum were lost when my inbox on AOL was deleted, I have decided to do another open call for Mortis Arcanum in order to restore some of the lost work.

This gives the writers who lost work the opportunity to resend their submissions to me as well as giving new writers a chance to submit something as well.

What're We Looking For
We're looking for spells, magical items, magic related prestige classes, meta-magic feats, core classes centered around a magic concept, as well as new undead and constructs with a death magic theme to them. Keep in mind that the theme of this book is evil, so submissions should reflect that in flavor. Thanks to the SRD being updated, we're also looking for epic level material to add to Mortis Arcanum. So send in those evil epic crunchies you may have created for a high level villain NPC :)

The only thing we ask you not to include is graphic depictions of sexual activities (rape, etc.) since such material will lower the chance of the manuscript going to actual print since the D20 STL was rewrote.

We're also looking for talented writers who can come up with a good amount of fluff for the flavor text. However, these writers wouldn't be needed until after the crunch was selected for the open call.

The Deadline: April 15th, 2004 by 12:00 AM Midnight

Format and How to Send: All submissions must be sent to me in .RTF or .TXT format, because I cannot open anything else. Do not format (bold, tab, italics, tables, ANYTHING) your submissions. Do not send your submissions in the body of your e-mail. I lost quite a few submissions for Mortis Arcanum because AOL decided to purge my Inbox without asking. If you send an actual attachment, I can download it to the Mortis Arcanum folder on my hard drive. Please attach as many submissions in one file as you can. Multiple files are accepted, but discouraged since they make final selection of work disorganized and difficult. Send all submissions to: roetyrant@aol.com

Spelling/Grammar Check!: Use them. Most modern word processors have them built in. They are your friend and may save my editors their sanity and what hair they have left. I will not accept a submission that requires an almost total rewrite due to bad english unless it has a brilliant and unique concept.

Scan Your Computer!: Anyone sending me a virus ridden submission will not only not have their submission added to the book, but they'll also be forever forbidden from submitting anything else to RoEG Publishing. I have a lot of work stored on this computer from all my books and projects and the last thing I need is a macro virus which destroys all that hard work in a few seconds. So make sure and SCAN your hard drive and submissions BEFORE sending them to me.

Is my Submission Accepted?: Do not hope for an approval or disapproval of your submissions until AFTER the April 15th deadline. Until that time, you will only recieve a message stating that your submission was indeed downloaded by myself. Also, if you ask a question and no one awnsers you here for a few days, then please e-mail me question.

How Much Will I be Paid?: Since this will most likely be a PDF, you will only be paid if you submit at least 10% of the material for Mortis Arcanum and then only a percentage of what we make for profit after the artists are paid. However you will still gain a contributor's copy. If our imprinter likes the book (thats a fairly moderate IF since we have no concrete deal with our imprinter to publish all our books, only the ones they like), then we will go to print with the manuscript and writers will be paid anywhere from 1 cent to 3 cents a word for the work they had accepted. More experienced writers will be paid more money than inexperienced writers.

Formatting: Please use the same format for spells, magical items, etc. as found in the 3.5E SRD. This also includes epic level material. When writing epic level spells, make sure you have the correct Spellcraft DC for the spells or as close as you think it should be (since assigning DC is more of an art than a science).

What, if any, contact information do you want with the submissions?
I tried posting but damn ie crashed so here it goes again.

Though i'm not working with ROEG on this Open Call like I am for Blasphemous Bestiary, i'll chime in with what I feel is a good guideline for contact info in Open Call Submissions.

Barring any specific requests for information by the company doing the open call, or with a lack of any specific info, its best to do the following.

Include, in the body of the submission, not the email, your full legal name and email address (the one you're most likeley to be reached at). If you're making a submisssion for a project that might yeild payment then it is a good idea to also include your mailing address.

Some submittors tend to include their phone numbers, but unless requested I dont think its nessassary. Not many companies contact their open call applicants over the phone as email is a more reliable way of contact.

hope this helps.

How would we know if our submission was crunched by AOL? Should those of us who submitted originally resend our files? Can we send new stuff? Should we send to roetyrant@aol.com and another email address in case AOL decides to be naughty again?

Thanks :)

And how does one apply to be one of these writers?

*sigh* I'll get KoL's attention over at his own forum.
Till he replies, i suggest gathering examples of work you've done that contains a good amount of fluff, if you havnt created anything unique before, maybe take SRD Monsters and re-describe them in your own words with alternate descriptions and flavor to showcase your writing.

I'll try to get KoC to pay attention here and answer these questions for you guys.

Below is an example spell from Mortis Arcanum that I myself wrote for the special Lich Ritual chapter. Those of you wishing to be fluff writers should either post here or e-mail me some appropriate flavor text to go with this spell.

Toadstool Curse
Evocation [Evil]
Level: Drd 5
Casting Time: One action
Target: One creature
Duration: Instantaneous
Components: V, S, M, Lich
Sacrifice: 1d4 Wis
Saving Throw: Reflex negates
Spell Resistance: Yes

With a wave of a hand, the caster throws magically created spores into the face of one creature which fails its reflex saving throw. If a target pass their save, it is assumed the creature moved quickly enough to avoid getting the spores in their eyes, nose, and mouth. Those that fail immediately take 3d6 points of damage as the spores began to rapidly grow into a hard black fungus. The second round, the target is blinded as the fungus consumes their eyes and invades the interior of their skull.

This process takes ten rounds, with the target losing 10% of their current hit points every round as their flesh is consumed and/or transformed into fungus. When all hit points are lost, the target dies and is completely transformed into a pillar of fungus the color of the blackest pit in hell.

The true horror of this spell is that this magical fungus doesn't allow the target's soul to escape its confines after the body is consumed. It continually feeds on the soul to fuel its own existence until the fungal colony itself is destroyed by magical fire or acid. Until the fungal pillar is destroyed, the soul locked inside it will remain tortured and unable to be resurrected or raised.

If a Remove Curse is cast on the infected individual during the 10 rounds that they're being consumed, the process ends. However, the damage caused by the fungus in previous rounds cannot be healed except through a Heal spell or more powerful divine magic.

Material Component: The fungal spores from several poisonous mushrooms and powdered bones from a lich.

Lich Component: This spell can only be cast by a character with the lich template. Living creatures do not contain the corruption of magic that this type of spell needs to come into being.
