His demihuman dieties articles were the sort of setting detail that convinced me to subscribe to Dragon, back in the day. Awesome stuff.

I guess he's too busy not being James Bond these days.

Man, given how much he gave to D&D -- the modern versions of the races (minus the halflings) are essentially all him, via the Point of View articles -- it's a shame that he's no longer interested in being part of RPGs. A great underappreciated talent, IMO.
Yes, too bad... on the other hand, it's understandable that in the life of some persons there comes a moment in which it's necessary to turn a new page...

And given how he was unceremoniously dumped by Hasbro after having done so much for D&D... well, I'd have shown the industry my backside, too.

Yeah, usually happens just east of Omaha.

Nah. I'm not letting that go with just a shrug.

The guy won't even log on to a message board and explain with a note that took him more than 1 minute to what he's up to in his life. Won't take the time to talk to a bunch of fans who respected his work and were genuinely interested in what's become of him?

We have a word for that: it's called being a jerk. It may be nurtured in bitterness, it may be entirely justified, but don't flinch from calling it exactly what it is: and it's called being a jerk.

Look at Gary. If ever there was someone who deserves to feel bitter at the way the business of gaming turned out - it would be him.

Does he avoid fans? No. He continues to make himself accessible (look at the pics outside his front door from last week, for god's sakes). Participates in discussions and minutiae from the past to a most accommodating degree. Capital fellow. Decent man. Gamer.

Frank Mentzer? Same. Rob Kuntz? Same. Even fast forward to the modern era - Monte Cook, Skip Williams?

Ready, aye, ready - to just talk to a fan.

So Roger Moore may be a wonderful man, a guy you would trust with your wallet, your kids, your credit card or your country - or all four.

But for declining to offer much of anything substantial to interested fans - I'd call him a jerk - and there it is.

Ya know, you could have saved about 500 words in your post and about 45 seconds of my time by just saying you think he's a jerk for ignoring the fans.

Andrew,

Hey, there. I should say that I don't have anything against Hasbro itself, even after being laid off. That's life. I liked the company and the people I worked with. I just wanted to put the past behind me when I was let go. It wasn't bitterness, just a desire to move on and do something new with my life. I had been an AD&D man for ages, and clearly it was time to be something else.

Hasbro, Wizards, and TSR were all okay with me. I got along with most people pretty well and wish them a good time.

Working on Greyhawk was a special treat for me. I loved doing the "The Adventure Begins" book, though it was hard to complete and ran into a lot of problems along the way. It was worth the trouble, though, and I hope it got the campaign going again in a good way. I gave it my best.

Best wishes to you all,

Roger

I agree completely. After Gary, my favorite contributor to D&D. His "Return of the Eight" is what pulled me back into D&D just before 3E.

No.

He owes you, and me, nothing -- and there is no call whatsoever to insult him, especially on a message board where such things aren't permitted. If you feel like harboring bitterness for some slight, that's entirely your prerogative, but please don't do it here.

If this is a problem for some reason, please email me instead of discussing it in this thread.
