Rogue/Ranger Question

First Post
I have a level 5 Rogue character that I would like to multi class. He should be able to do decent damage in a sneak attack and still be able to use his skills effectively. I was thinking of multi-classing into a Rogue/Ranger so I could get the TWF feats but I don't really know how to go about this.

Basic stats are as follows. If you need more let me know.

Elf Rogue (5) CN
14 - Str
19 - Dex
12 - Con
14 - Wis
10 - Int
10 - Cha

Feats:
Improved Initiative
Weapon Finesse

Max on most Rogue skills and some others dabbled into.

I think I may have screwed myself with the feat choices as I just chose to do this build recently. I have already redone this character once and my DM has already said no more changes. I have never played a rogue before and I have heard of a bunch of combos that you can do with them such as the Rogue/Sorc and Rogue/Fighter combos. Neither of those really appeal to me as much as the TWF ranger class. Any help would be appreciated.

Well, those aren't bad feats at all for a Rogue. Any opponents you act before on the first round are flatfooted against you, so Improved Initiative is a definite help, and Finesse is at least giving a better bonus that weapon focus.

I'm assuming core books only? Why does Fighter/Rogue not appeal to you, but Ranger does? Either can get TWF fast enough, so I assume there's some other reason you like Ranger. Because if tat is all you value from Ranger then there's not much more ot say than take 2 levels and go back to Rogue. Or even better, 1 level of Fighter (grab it, go back).

Oh...there is the favored class issue. I know your DM said no more re-writes, but if you multiclass into anything but wizard now, you'll lose 20% of all the xp you earn. You would do much better as a Wood Elf from the Monster Manual, which gets Favored Class: Ranger. It also gets +2 str, -2 int (on top of the normal racial features), which hurts your skill points and makes Finesse less attractive...

Yeah, it's a little too late to be making changes in your character concept that would require much multiclassing. You'll already qualify for the TWF feat at 6th-level, so you may as well remain a Rogue. The only other effective combo you might do right now (short of non-core materials, which I don't have much of for 3.5 so I can't give advice regarding them) is to multiclass into Wizard for a few levels to qualify for the Arcane Trickster prestige class later (in the 3.5 Dungeon Master's Guide and the 3.5 System Reference Document; if you're playing 3.0 it's a bit different and found in Tome & Blood).

I think Rogue is a better choice. Take next feat from being lv 6 as TWfing.
Do you have Use Magic Device?

or buy a scroll/wand of Heroics (bonus feat: choose TWF).
Then you have the feat for 10 minutes or more each time.

No reason not to if have the spell allowed/UMD.

If you DM doesn't care about multiclassing penalties: Ranger is fine, but Ranger only grants TWfing at lv 2..

If you don't mind sacrificing the skill points, take a level of Fighter or PsyWar at 6th level- you'd get 2 Feats to work with.

Just for efficiency's sake- what books are you allowed to use?
