D&D 5E Rogue with Find Familiar?

I'd be interested in creating a 1st level spell:

Assassinate Familiar

It would target a single familiar in a fairly healthy range. Require LoS and force them to make some saves until they pass/die.

With the way many familiars are used in combat, I'm suprised some wizard hasn't made it yet. :hmm:

Hmm. I guess they could just use Magic Missile :D

In terms of sheer power and utility, an owl is the ultimate rogue familiar. Flying speed, good stealth and perception, darkvision, and thanks to flyby it can swoop in, use the help action on an enemy to grant the rogue advantage, and then immediately fly away without taking opportunity attacks.

Keep in mind that the help advantage goes to the next party member to attack, which may not be you.

If you use the attack-aiding option in Help, the next ally who attacks the target gets the benefit.

That doesn't mean you can't still use it, and often get it, it's just not 100% always-on automatically.

As a DM, I can safely say that one of my firmest guiding tenets is:

"Thou shalt not suffer a familiar (sent habitually into dangerous situations) to live. Least of all an owl".

Just because they can disengage, doesn't mean they can't be IMPALED IN A HAIL OF CROSSBOW BOLTS the following turn.

Well, teamwork is still awesome, right?

It's 10 gold pieces, dude. And a level 1 spell slot (not even that, if you're a ritual caster). If team monsters is wasting attack actions to bring down an easily replaceable summon, that's still a win for team PCs. Not to mention the fact that not all monsters are good at ranged combat.

For sure! Based on soooo many posts online about how a familiar was always-on advantage for rogues I was a tad disappointed that it really didn't work that way. But honestly it's more fair, and a bit more fun as well. I'm glad to give my team a bit of a boost depending on the initiative. And if I really need it there are ways to make it happen, so fair game. RP and fun > pure meta-gaming.
