roleplaying magazines

I'd like to think there's a market for a broader interest gaming magazine (besides just D&D), but the long, slow, and seemingly unopposed, death of the RPGA's Polyhedron, would seem to indicate otherwise.
Well, it's kinda hard to sell such a $6-$7 magazine issue for less than half the content that is of interest to you, at the same time, you're being flooded by angry Dungeon readers -- many who unsubscribed in protest -- pleading you to get rid of the other magazine.

Well, they're not roleplaying mags, but I have to put in a good word for Smithsonian Magazine, Archaeology, and Archaeology Odyssey. I've found numerous ideas for adventures, items, and campaign settings in their pages.

Janta,

Which of the two Archaeology magazines would you recommend higher? [For use/inspiration in gaming.]

While the question wasn't directed at me, I also read both of them from time to time (my Anthropology degree and archaeological experience make me do it... :) ). I like Archaeology best, but both are very good, full of lots of fascinating information.

Thanks for the advice. Anyone else want to make a recommendation? I have been looking at subscribing to a magazine like this for a while.

I like Archaeology as well, especially when they show digs at a town or village site. Insta map! :)

BINGO! One of the best things about using it for a gaming resource!

Also, if you are near a university, check out some of the archaeology research journals they should have in the library stacks. I pilfer them on occasion for maps and ideas.

I'd go with Archaeology rather than Archaeology Odyssey. AO sometimes seems to focus a lot on archaeology of Biblical lands, which doesn't always do much for me gamewise. Oh, and there's the British Archaeology Magazine which is also quite good, but focuses on archaeology in the British Isles. BAM also makes its old issues available online, so it's good reading for when you're bored at the office (or wherever).

Another vote for Archaeology mag. It's much better than AO for dming inspirations imho (or it was a couple years ago, when I worked at a magazine shop and read 'em both).

Thanks folks! This sounds like a resource I would enjoy very much. The strangest thing I use for gaming sessions ia Opera libretti for plot ideas. The adventure I wrote for BadAxe's Halfling book was based on an opera.

I had no idea you used Archaeology HM - maybe you could bring an issue to our next game?
