Along the same lines:

Summon Monster I, Celestial Badger, 1d2-1 damage.

1d2-1??? Why not just say it does 1 pt. of damage, since no attack that hits can do less? Silly.

The distinction can become important when penalties and bonuses to Str are figured in, eg from ray of enfeeblement or bull's strength.

Not really, since a penalty to STR would result in...one point of damage. But...good point about the bonus. With a high enough Strength the Celestial Badger would become capable of doing 1-2 points of damage rather than just 1.
