I'm a Pro subscriber, have been for two years now. I started free in 2020 until I got the hang of the system, and then upgraded to use the API. Knowing nothing about coding whatsoever, it took a lot of time and research to figure things out, but when scripting works it works really well and improves my games. Being able to grab every token at once and hit Initiative and everything is automatically sorted into the combat tracker is a godsend, and faster than anything I ever did in person. I figured out how to attach sound effects and GIF's to player weapon attacks, which is something you can't port over from Beyond. Is it necessary? Absolutely not. Is it cool and fun? Yes, yes it is. I have also used dynamic lighting extensively and I for one love it. That is also something that can't be recreated in person at the table. Bottom line, I enjoy running games as much if not more than in person, something I never thought I would say. As a DM who was always a big fan of elaborate maps and props and miniatures, the switch to VTT opens the doors in every way. I used to print maps out in 26 single sheets, cut and tape them and roll them up and drive them to the game house. Ugh. I never want to do that again. Now I can digitally use maps the size of 50 sheets of paper. I use full color elaborate maps for the most mundane of situations just because I can. When I was running a Kobold Press module I wanted to do a city adventure. I was able to load a hi res image of the city of Zobeck to such a level that we could actually use player tokens down to the street and alley level. In a whole city. To my knowledge, there is no official city to explore in any VTT. I had to make it myself, but it was the most fun thing I've ever done for a RPG.
