Teaching a friend of mine to play 2nd Edition for the first time, I was helping him roll up a fighter. He gets some good rolls, and on my advice, puts that all-valuable 18 into strength.

I then tell him that he has to roll his percentile strength score as well. He doesn't really understand, but takes my word for it.

Then, as every player at the table stands in silent awe....

"Ah, crap." He says, "I got zeroes!"

I did manage to roll a few 18's every now and then, but never had anything higher than the 70's. Using the old 1st Ed. Cavalier rules though, I had several characters with 18/00 STR!

I did have plenty of players who cheated to get 18/00 though. One in particular always had an 18 in Strenght no matter what he played. Very suspicious...

I have only rolled it once using the 4d6 drop lowest to get the 18 then rolling straight '00' on percentile. It was for a one shot PC cavalier (5th level) to run in my cousin's Ravenloft game (the original I6 module - this was about 17 years ago). Aside from the 18/00 strength this guy also had 16 Int and 15 Wis and got a roll for psionics. He needed '00' again - take a guess what happened :D

So my psionic using, super strong cavalier fought Strahd Von Zarovich and he (with some help from the rest of the party ;) ) took him down!

Never played that character again but kept his character sheet for some time after that.

I had an 18/97 for sure but I dunno about 18/00

I did watch a guy get (on the 4d6 drop lowest system)

18,18,18,17,16,13

He was a human fighter who was frickin unstoppable.. GALVORNE was a legend. Too bad he was neutral evil and screwed the party over so many times.. lol.

My very first AD&D character (my third D&D character) got 18/98 and this was the highest value I have seen rolled.

Actually, it isn't... he should have simply lowered it to 18/99 (dwarven maximum).

That's what I did with my Dwarf--then I gave him a footman's mace to get the minimum damage versus small and man-sized creatures back up to 7. ;)

I had it once back in a 1st/2nd ed cross-over game. Was playing a ranger...who unfortunately later got tossed in the Donjon from a Deck of Many Things.

On that note, anyone who complains that half-orcs got the shaft in 3E might have forgotten that in 1E, they were limited to maxima of 17 Int, 14 Dex and Con, and 12 Cha...

14 Wisdom, not Con. They got +1 STR, +1 CON.

18(00) Strength, done it twice, 1st character a Ranger lived to retirement, the second was eaten by a hag with a Bag of Devouring, Regdar was not pleased. Regdar has seen it done a few times over the years in games. Regdar when DM'ing and when being DM'ed, rule was All Characters created in front of DM.
