Rope trick - detection of?

Ferox4

First Post
When using Rope Trick can it be detected by Detect Magic ? The spell description seems to indicate that since you are not on any plane it would be impossible to be detected (from the plane the spell was cast from or any other). If this is indeed the case, doesn't it seem fairly powerful for a second level spell?

Anyone?

Cheers,

How do you adjudicate the whole "extra dimensional space within an extra dimensional space" issue? If the party has a Bag of Holding, do they have to leave it outside?

I'm asking because it is very likely that we will be using Rope Trick in the next couple of sessions and we have a BOH. I don't want to cause a rip in the time-space continum that ultimately destroys the entire campaign multiverse. That would be bad.

it's been errata'd (or sage adviced, or something. But it's all official and stuff) somewhere, that you can take extradimentional storage items into an extradimentional space that is created by a spell safely.

So..

Bag of Holding inside a Rope Trick? A-Okay!

Portable Hole inside a Mord's Magnificient Mansion? Just peachy.

Bag of Holding inside a Portable Hole? Ah, no.

I'll try and find where it is stated, will post when I have the refrence.

Well, that detecting posted by PC is only partly true:

You have to be in the general area, and the Rope Trick would only register as a Faint aura. IF the detector made a Spellcraft check DC 17, they could ascertain that it was from the Transmutation school.

This then leads the question; what would cause detect magic to register a faint aura of Transmutation?

As low level Functioning Transmutation spell (1st -3rd), this could be quite a variety of things, but I believe most of them target creatures, and not a piece of space floating up in the air. So that is a sort of giveaway.

Now heres a question is the oppening of the extra dimension space something you can target a spell at is it an object so to speak. If so just cast this to make it undetectable.

From the SRD.
Misdirection
Illusion (Glamer)
Level: Brd 2, Sor/Wiz 2
Components: V, S
Casting Time: 1 action
Range: Close (25 ft. + 5 ft./2 levels)
Target: One creature or object, up to a 10-ft. cube in size
Duration: 1 hour/level
Saving Throw: Will negates (object)
Spell Resistance: No
By means of this spell, the character misdirects the information from divination spells that reveal auras. On casting the spell, the character chooses another object within range. For the duration of the spell, the subject of misdirection is detected as if it were the other object. Detection spells provide information based on the second object rather than on the actual target of the detection unless the caster of the detection succeeds at his save.
This spell does not affect other types of divination.

the way i look at it is if you can dispel it you can detect it. unless steps are taken to hide if of course. i see no reason why you can't dispel a rope trick so i would allow detect magic to detect it normally.

while some logic for magic is a good thing too much can be a head ache.
