RPG Tournament play - tell me more

Hello,
For those getting back from GenCon or who've been to gaming cons before, I would like to know more about RPG tournament play.

I understand that some tourney games use a point system, or some might have players choose the best other player, and so on to determine individual "winners" or a final score/rating.

Can anyone shed some light on how this process works for games they've played, and what you think about this kind of tourney system? Is there anything like the old Infocom or King's Quest games where there is some set of possible points for doing all the cool stuff/quest stuff?

Thanks!

I can't speak for all of the tourneys, but I can speak (briefly) about how we handled the AE Tourney: Runes of Revival. We aren't willing to deconstruct the scoring, so I'll give you an overview. We graded on both achieving certain "milestones" in the scenario and roleplaying. It was timed - if you finished entirely during the four hour slot, you had more opportunities to achieve those milestones. Though we allowed DMs to finish the scenario for the players but stop the scoring. Roleplaying turned out to be a fairly decisive factor since the better the players roleplayed, the more points they earned.

Now, other tourneys grade in a number of different ways. Maybe some other folks here can chime in?
