All:

Below are the three main competitors of the RPGA. They sprang up recently for various reasons:

BTW, if you were 'kicked out' of the RPGA because you're an unpleasant person, these people probably don't want you either.

Anybody know of any others?

jh

I'm going to pimp The 13 Kingdoms as a home-play alternative. Much less paperwork, and much more user-friendly.

And we don't want unpleasant people either :)

Emirikol, how big are these orgs? Are they *really* at the cons? If so, they might be a good alt to the RPGA stuff (variety being the spice of life and all that hehe)

Wow, that was my 1000th post. I specifically was gonna save that for a funny OT thread that would quickly find its way to META oblivion, and I BLEW it!

Joined the last two. I thought I'd joined the first, but it turns out to be a player you have to pay. No price listed.

The last two also have Yahoo Groups mailing lists, so if you'd druther you can subscribe to those instead.

Until the Adventure Role Playing League makes a few changes concerning memberships and listing the fee therefor, I would recommend against joining them.

The other two? Go ahead and join. They look fine by me.

Of the three, only the third seems to be doing the thing I joined the RPGA for all those years ago; competitive ROLE playing of pregen characters. One of the reasons I don't go to cons much anymore is that it's hard to find those tables anymore. It's all Living this and Living that. Give me the challenge of playing what hits the table, man, woman or child, that's what really made the RPGA for me.

Thanks for the information, Mythusmage. It's worth a look, at least.

Hello,

I'm Michelle, a representative of ARPL. Well someone was nice enough to point out that some one was posting about us, so I thought I'd pop over and give you guys the 411.

First of all, we do have a yahoo group:

adventureroleplayingleague at yahoogroups.com

The sign up form is on the front page of our site.

Price: It is $24.00 per year. Sorry if that was unclear, I have fixed that now. Currently we are accepting Charter Playerships. Basically you get an extra 6 months of subscription, and 180 day money back guarantee. Now of course we do have a bill me option so you can join not have to pay up front. Non-players can play in ARPL events but ony players can order modules. Currently we have a catalog of 5 classic-type modules(which we call capsule modules) all of which premeired at Taticon 2003 in Denver, Colorado. We are awaiting submissions of more capsule modules and we are working on sanctioning several campaigns.

ARPL really began in June 2003. We have had representatives this year at Bencon, Gencon, Origins and Taticon with forums for ARPL at Origins and Taticon.

We are here to get other RPG campaigns out there. We offer distribution, advertising and tracking. To players we offer a chance to play in other gaming systems, and be tracked in those systems. We are a non-profit organization with no ties to any corporate body. We do need money to run(website, advertising(both us and campaigns) and offer more benifits to our players). We are starting a judges program as well, which we hope will be backed by Scott Dunphy of RP-Artisans with his judge training program and gm tracking system.

Join our mailing list and ask us any questions you like. We do have members of RP-Artisans and RPN on our list, but I suggest you join their lists too.

Living Enworld is also a great play by post alternative: It's free, each DM writes his own adventures, and, best of all, EVERYBODY gets to help build the world. Want to make your own city? Go ahead. Have an important NPC your character might want to meet again? Post the NPC in the Gazeeter, tell a DM that you want to find the NPC in your next adventure, and, if the DM is willing, you've got it. Adventures can be run by anybody, we've been considering some kind of DM reward program, and the world will actually change.
I didn't tell you this, but look out for the first world shaking events sometime in the next month or two.
To find out more, come by the Living Enworld forums and view the Guide to Living Enworld. If you like what you see, post your character (3.5 rules, max starting gold, 30 point buy) in the Character Thread, and report to the Red Dragon Inn to start talking to other players and finding an adventure. As soon as I review you character you'll be reay to leave the Inn on your first adventure.

Hi, Michelle! Considering how much trouble Ryan Dancy is having with LC, I hope you avoid some of his frustrations.

Me, I'm all for the pre-gen character modules. I love them, and they're no longer the focus of RPGA that they used to be.

The Adventure Role Playing League

Hey gang,

Michelle is one of our board members and I see she has already posted here, giving a nickel review of the Adventure Role Palying League, generally in response to the post that one should not join the ARPL becuase we require dues and we have not yet put up many adventures for play at cons.

I am the league director of the ARPL. You might expect me to get all defensive, but I won't. I agree, now is not the time to join ARPL. We are just getting started. We recently finished the business of writing our rules and bylaws, and now we are moving towards gathering up adventures and campaigns for sanction. When we have a good sampling, we will move forward to create game days all over the country for people to try us out without having to join the league. These are also our fundraisers. Meanwhile, we will be bringing games to all major cons in North AMerica and many throughout the world.

So, give us time to do this right, and when you see that ARPL is right for you, sign up as a player!

Our web site is growing. It seems a little sparse right now, because this is just our beginning. As we get more volunteers, it will move faster. The Web site has three types of access: public viewing, registered visitors, which is free, and player access which is for players only. Feel free to sign up as a visitor and get our information.

We also have a yahoogroups discussion list, which you can join from the Web site. That list is for discussing what ARPL is up to and what we should be doing. Now is the time to contribute ideas, because we are taking ideas very seriously as we create our infrastructure.

The mission of the ARPL is "to support, promote and advance the sport of role-playing games, by being a sanctioning body, by centralizing distribution, and by providing organizational assistance to role-playing-game events." We are independent and non-profit. Dues are meant to to cover expenses at cost, without any profits. Our board of directors and our executive staff are forbidden from accepting money or employment from game publishers. Campaign directors for adventure settings have full artistic control, and writers can use any game system they choose in writing the capsule adventures (which are often called Classic Adventures).

We are looking for volunteers who share our ideals. There is a lot of work to do, adn the sooner it gets done, the sooner we can show the world what the ARPL is made of. If you want to learn more, join us on the discussion list or ask me for more information. There is also a text file on the yahoogroups site that explains what we are doing.

And please, tell us what we are doing wrong if you should see something amiss! That is the reason for having our discussion list.

Feel free to ask me questions. I will try to get back to this forum again in the next few days, and I am on the ARPL discussion list daily.
