Rude Awakening (sleeping rules)?

How do you determine if a sleeping party member is awoken by another party member's call to "wake up!"?

What skills, checks, or rolls determine this?

Listen Check. DM determines DC according to noise and activity levels. I usually will say DC 5 or 10 if someone shouts or actual fighting is within 30 feet.

I believe the listen DC for a pitched battle is about -5, but it increases by 1 for every 10' of distance...

Not sure- my books are with a friend right now since I was traipsing around the country- but I believe the PH sets the DC for a pitched battle under the listen skill description.

There is a penalty to listen while sleeping though. I think it may be a -10. It shouldn't be difficult to wake up while sleeping, but it's not automatic either.

I use a listen check (usually from -5 (combat) to 10 (walking)), with a penalty of -15 for those asleep. Making the check wakes you up.

In addition I use a Fortiyude Save (DC 10) for. If you make the check you can act normally, if you fail you can only take a partial action (or no action if its a surprise round). If you fail by more 5 or more you are groggy from sleep and lose all actions in the first round.

You could substitute the Fortitude Save with a CON check if you don't want the PCs to improve as they grow more experienced.

I read somewhere that a sleeping person should be "taking zero" on his or her Listen check. I thought it was in the FAQ, but now I can't find it.

Seemed like a good idea to me.

I read that as well. That could be an interesting of doing all skills for unconcious charachters. If someone is knocked out and falls, they could still insticntivly Tumble, but just at their ranks.

Bad guy looks down cliff.

" yeah, that fall had to kill him."

Usually, I don't get so rules detailed as to need a check. A "pitched battle" wouldn't require a check by me, unless it's very far away.

Just make sure that this is "normal" sleep and
not a sleep spell:

SRD:
A sleep spell causes a comatose slumber...
...Sleeping creatures are helpless. Slapping or wounding awakens affected creatures, but normal noise does not. Awakening a creature is a standard action (an application of the aid another action).

I assume when most adventurers are sleeping, they are
not in a "comatose slumber" (unless they spent the evening
tavern hopping...).

I use a listen check at -20, with a DC of -5. Each round you fail you get a +2 to your check. Players can take the Light Sleeper feat to reduce the penalty for being asleep to -10. Taking damage wakes you up automatically.

No one has taken light sleeper yet, but after that midnight attack by the green dragon last session...
