'Rulership' Paragon Path?

S'mon

Legend
Are there any Paragon Paths where you receive benefits for ruling a domain? I'm looking at the Paragon tier of my old school/sandboxy Wilderlands 4e game, and I'd like to make Dominions & rulership part of it. One thing I'd like is optional but encouraged Paragon Path benefits for rulership.

Yeah its perhaps a bit ironic considering DMG 2 specifically talks about a campaign arc in which the PCs each become rulers of a nation, but I'm not aware of any PPs that specifically relate to rulership. The Half-Elf racial would probably be closest since (IIRC) it has a lot to do with diplomacy, etc., but it certainly doesn't even really hint at being a ruler of a nation.

Y'know, I just looked at Legendary Sovereign; it's not that strong by ED standards and most of it looks like it could be turned into a PP with minimal changes. 'This is not my Fate' might need tuning down a bit.

My response to reading Legendary Sovereign is "this is a spectacularly lame ED"; I think that you're right that with a little tuning it might make a decent PP. That said, to my mind the problem with Legendary Sovereign is more basic. It's an ED that's about someone becoming a sovereign, not about someone being a sovereign. The idea behind LS appears to be that the PC in question is following a "return of the king" story line, and that the game ends at level 30 with them having become king and ruling a happy kingdom. There's nothing wrong with that storyline (although it doesn't feel very Epic to me), but it doesn't really work well for someone who wants to run a domain game, where the PC is actually acting as king for those levels.

I agree. The not-being-ruler-yet seems just fluff text, albeit incredibly lame fluff text. You're level 30, Bob next to you is becoming a god, and you get to start ruling a kingdom?

Hm, I'm starting to think that despite the sample campaign in DMG2, 4e actively steers PCs away from domain rulership. *sigh*

Edit: OTOH Becoming-King would make a lot more sense as a PP while you're Strider-becomes-Aragorn, then you get to choose your ED afterwards, while you're Gilgamesh. But that doesn't solve my initial problem of finding attractive rulership-based abilities.

I think one of the reasons why they are not necessarily encouraging PCs becoming rulers is that unless all the PCs are rulers (as in the DMG 2 example) you are potentially creating a lot of conflict between the players.

A: I need you to go with me on quest X
B: Eh, sorry, I don't really care about X.
A: Umm, I'm not really concerned as to whether or not you care about X, I need you to go with me.
B: Sorry, it just sounds boring Ted, I'm more inclined to head on over and do quest Y.
A: I don't care if it sounds boring. And stop calling me Ted, I'm your KING!
B - E: *roll eyes*

Obviously this is an extreme example and obviously a mature group can handle this situation pretty easily, but I can also envision this sort of thing actually playing out with a lot of groups. It could get even worse if you have an optimizer or tactician in the group mixed with a storyteller, etc.

Rather than a PP or ED, I think that I would treat it as something akin to a "Boon" (DMG2). Give it a monetary value, as a reward. Make it something with both mundane and role playing value. That's the value that the player can draw, from his kingdom, in mundane materials, lackeys, etc..

If the player works to maintain it, rather than just soaking it, then he gets the next step of the "Boon" when it becomes appropriate. If he doesn't, then his evil half brother seizes the throne, while he's off on an adventure. At that point he's a "Deposed Ruler" or "Exiled King", and gets to role play that angle ;)
