Rules of the Game Spell Description Part 4

Hi!

Has someone read the Rules of the Game Installment Part 4, specifically: Range, more specifically the "WEIRD" rule on maximum range?

Do the rules of the PHB/DMG support that kind of logic?

Please let me know if I'm the only one not satisfied with this (house?) rule. ;)

Kind regards

From the SRD:

RANGE
A spell’s range indicates how far from you it can reach, as defined in the Range entry of the spell description. A spell’s range is the maximum distance from you that the spell’s effect can occur, as well as the maximum distance at which you can designate the spell’s point of origin. If any portion of the spell’s area would extend beyond this range, that area is wasted. Standard ranges include the following.

I have actually used the maximum range rule to avoid hitting party members with area spells like fireball or sleet storm. You need a big open space with the enemy in the middle and your friends on the other side, but it can and does happen.
