Runic Magic?

Firedancer

First Post
Runic magic is a staple of fantasy, literature and game, either in the core system as "symbols of" or other means. WotC have made an attempt at runic magic (Races of Stone - runesmith? for one), not 100% sure what I think of it as haven't looked at it indepth.

What are peoples thoughts on this runic magic system? Does it do rune casting justice? Is it flawed or fine?
Has another company produced a runic magic system that is better?

I've seen rune caster write ups that were OK, but I had to make my own up to also have it be a good PC class.

Which is essentially a Wizard, but their material components are all Runestones and their magic items are all rune items, such as runesticks instead of wands.

Plus their runestones are made out of increasingly expensive materials as the spell level increases, to the point where there 7th to 9th level spells are more like rune coins made of silver, gold, and platinum. Or expensive minerals.

Their biggest advantage is that they have no verbal or somantic components to their spellcasting, that is all taken care of when they mae their runestones.

Their biggest disadvantage is that they have to have their runestones to cast anything.

That is my Runemark in a nutshell. Plus other things that I borrowed heavily from Troll Lord Games Runemark in their D20 adventure "Winter Dark".
