It's true. OOTA has literally dozens. I generally run allies because for me that lets me bring the world to life for the players.I guess you're unfamiliar with WotC's 5e adventures - recently, they love handing out allies...
I guess I foremost try to remember their motives and play strongly to those, with a decent concern for their own skin. Exaggerating motives tends to create entertaining gameplay.
