A couple of years ago, I discovered Cthulhu Dark and fell in love instantly. In my opinion, it’s still one of the best supernatural horror RPGs out there — alongside Delta Green.
Since then, I’ve often thought about adapting it: broadening the action system, deepening character creation, and reshaping it to fit other genres I love. One day, it grew into something new. A different mood, a different time. And so RURAL GOTHIC was born.
Rural Gothic is a rules-light supernatural horror RPG set in colonial America—perfect for stories in the spirit of The Witch or Sleepy Hollow. It’s a compact but rich multi-pamphlet game, made with love (and dread) by me, Umberto Pignatelli, and my partner-in-crime Matteo Ceresa, with gorgeous “Cult of the Lamb”-style art by Tessa Basanese and editing by Francesco Nepitello!
It’s also the first release under our new indie label, Smart Bonsai Games, where we’ll publish the games we care about — on our own terms.
