[S&S] A Pricing Question

AnthonyRoberson

First Post
I may just be ignorant of the marketplace, but I recently purchased The Tomb of Abysthor and the Psionics Toolkit for review and I had a question.

Both products are priced at $11.99 US, but The Tomb of Abysthor is a lot bigger book at 96 pages. Can someone give me an explanation for that? As a consumer, I perceive the Psionics Toolkit to be a poorer value since I am getting fewer pages for the same price.

Thanks for any information you can provide. I will be sure to include it in my review.

Module vs Sourcebook

I would disagree.

Modules are single use. You are paying $11.99 for a single use of 96 pages of material.

Sourcebooks are reference material that get used game after game. You are paying $11.99 for ten to one hundred (or more) uses of fewer pages of material.

I feel that sourcebooks are more valuable than modules overall, and can be priced accordingly.

It's hard to judge just length. I buy 112pg books from on company for 8$, and another company for 15$. Does that automatically make the cheaper book better? No, it's the content that really matters.

Tomb was supposed to be shorter. Clarke mentioned this but they couldn't cut out the good stuff...so they kept it in. Course I hope Clarke shows up to help my case. :)

Hey Anthony,

Everyone's pretty much hit upon the reasons: Necromancer went through the same thing with Abysthor that we did with Beyond All Reason - it just ended up bigger than projected.

The price is set far in advance of actual release. We felt that $11.99 for a Psionics Sourcebook that was 56 pages was a decent price.

Tomb of Abysthor and Beyond All Reason ended up being priced a little low, actually. Take advantage while you can! :)

The above info is correct.

Tomb was initially solicited as a 64 page book at an 11.95 price. Becasue it was delayed we felt we should keep that price point. Problems is (or for the purchaser, the good part) is that I went nuts and over wrote the product. I didnt think it would be fair to cut it down since people had waited for it. So I said what the heck and kept it at 96 pages and sold it at the 11.95 price. I thought it was the right thing to do.

So buy it now! :)
