The way I handle it is that the character may end their turn in mid-jump as the action does the movie freeze-frame pan to another character. I do warn them that it might be dangerous, the enemy sees what they are doing and may have time to attack them in mid-air (I give advantage on the attack) and that may result in an additional athletics check.

So sure, leap over that chasm, but the gnolls on the other side have a chance to pepper you with arrows.
