Salvaging a Friend's Rogue

*Class build: At least 3 in Swashbuckler, at least 4 in Rogue (Uncanny Dodge...accept no substitutes). I like to dip Swordage 2 levels at levels 9-10, but that's fully up to you and what you can get away with without xp penalties.

We generally don't play with exp penalties, within reason. Swashbuckler seems pretty useful, especially since we've been dealing with piracy/naval trade for the entire campaign so far.

You are correct about the dex increase, and since I mentioned that he's probobly going to die from mummy rot (failed a fortitude save when he triggered a trap) unless I can level up in a few days time I can get him to run a swashbucker/rogue. Our campaigns degenerate into giant brawls anyway, so skills won't be too much of a problem (Me and one other guy are the only ones that try to RP). I have no personal experience with swordsage, so i'm not sure if I feel that I can recommend it to him, but Daring Outlaw will make his class very powerful.

As a side note, what do you mean about the chronocharms? It says that it takes 24 hours of wear in order to be usable and only one may be worn at a time.

BLAST!

most of my ideas for rogue have already been taken. but to be honest, i'd say a quick fix would be a re-appraisal of his choice in feats...they stink. craven, staggering strike, demonic sneak attack, flick of the wrist and leadership would be nice.

craven and staggering strike just go nicely, and demonic sneak attack, depending on the number of demonic heritor feats you have, lets you re-roll sneak attack die. flick of the wrist is a nice "auto sneak-attack 1/encounter" ability, and can easily pull in far more than it's weight each day. leadership, only because he could have a well-armoured, tough as nails pal, always at his side: i'm thinking rogue 1 / barbarian X. the benefit here would be someone to always flank, thus giving your man the ability to sneak attack literally every round. plus, when he lands a stagger, his barbo friend can really rip into the poor staggered sod and mash him a new one.

Oh, my bad. You can wear different chronocharms together in the same throat slot, but not two or more of the same kind. Bummer. Well, he's not doing scout anyway, so it doesn't matter.

I have been playing a campaign with a relatively new player and he's not too happy with his character. I'm not the DM, so I am not omnipotent in this situation.

He is a human and currently has the following stats:
STR 16
DEX 18
CON 10
INT 11
WIS 11
CHA 14

We are level 6-7, and he has dodge, mobility, weapon focus(rapier), and improved toughness.

I have been trying to find a good PrC for him but the better ones like Invisible Blade are a bit out of his reach. He has expressed interest in becoming an assassin, but his int score will make him somewhat useless.

He keeps dying without doing anything useful and is becoming bored. What can be done to salvage his class?

USE Magic Device = UMD
Use it.
Scrolls of Displacement/Blink/Grease/Invisibility/Greater Invisibility/etc

Mobility is a really bad choice:
mobility=Mage Slayer,
weapon focus =Blind fight
Improved Toughness = Pierce Magical Concealment.

Combine with Blink ring/scrolls: now you deny enemies Dex to AC, you have a miss chance from enemies, and don't have a miss chance when you attack.

This is a better path than a Prc.
Yes, scrolls cost money (375 gp each) till you buy a ring of Blink, but it is worth it.
Ring of Blink costs 27, 000 gp.

There's a miss chance for melee attacks, but there may not be one for ranged attacks depending on how you interpret the Blink spell.

Or just do what every ranged rogue I've ever made does and get an awesome Seeking bow and proceed to not only not care if there's concealment, but actually start using fog spells to MAKE it to screw over your enemies, including other rogues dumb enough to not also get a Seeking bow.

I have always wondered how ranged rogues are useful. Unless I'm reading SA incorrectly, don't you only get it if the enemy is flat-footed or you're the one creating a flanking situation? How does one achieve that from a distance?

i believe there's an amulet called the "heartseeker amulet" in the magic item compendium. if memory serves, it lets you as a swift, turn an attack into a touch attack, twice a day. this might really help you land those hits, especially when you're failing to connect at the rate the charging wildshaped direbear druid is ;)
