Sampo?

Actually, Terry Pratchett included it in his book Discworld (Which was the sci-fi novel he penned before writing the Discworld series of fantasy books.)

The Sampo was effectively a Fabricator. Input the right information: feed in enough raw materials, and you get anything out... and i mean anything. The heroes started out with mud and water into wine. Then they made a feast for all people involved. Finally they fed the Sampo seaweed to make wood planks for the vikings. (who valued wood over everything else)

Ultimately, they took the sampo with them, but the control system from the artificial "flat planet" they were on created a demon that destroyed the sampo. Which was a huge problem, because one of the adventures could not eat anything on that planet because of the foerign protiens, and was relying on the Sampo to avoid going into a hunger range...

Don't you mean Strata?

Sampo - a progressive new corporation with an eye toward the future. Sampo is a company for people, by people.

Wow, there's potentially so many bad things I could do with a statement like that. ;)

That'd better not be a racist Welsh joke! :] :] :]

Sounds like Strata. According to Wikipedia, it was named Dysk in Polish, presumably to tie it in with Discworld, so it's possibly Disc/Discworld in other countries.

There's also the film "The Day the Earth Froze," which has been lovingly preserved by the folks at Mystery Science Theater 3000. Whenever I read the word "sampo," I think of that film and how the Joel and the Bots say it...

finnish mythology meets chinese martial arts. sounds cool to me!
anyone seen it yet? it was shown at the Toronto film festival but might be out in Finland already?

anyway, I'm currently workin out a sampo for my campaign, which is set in a world several thousand years after the events of the Kalevala, remember at the end of the story, the sampo is broken into pieces and scattered in the sea.
One or more parts are said to be still at the bottom of the sea (or in Ahto's realm), and the 'bright lid' which seems to be the most important part, might have some sort of planar travel ability as some have linked it to the stars or the heavens, which sounds cool to me. If the parts are all put together again, then it can be used to produce unlimited amounts of flour, salt and gold, which might well be metaphors for unlimited wealth and power rather than meant literally. no one will know until they find all the bits and put them together again,
