Samurai handbook and Green Ronin

In an interview in Asgard 1, Chris Pramas mentioned that he was tweaking with the idea of a samurai handbook when someone suggested to instead do a book on devils (legion of hell).

So what happened to this idea, has it been canceled due to the existence of OA? will it appears alongside the shaman and monsterhunter handbook? Does Green Ronin waits for a release of the samurai class in the SRD?

Probably because he does not want to compete with AEG's Rokugan products that will include Way of the Samurai supplement available soon ... at least not yet.

Granted, I would prefer a non-Rokugan material, most favorably a Kara-Tur based product (yeah, I know, WotC holds the trademarks and IP).

I think Way of the samurai will requires the game master guide and player handbook for traditional L5R. In Rokugan d20 to use way of the samurai, I think you'll need the three core rulesbook, OA, Rokugan, creatures of rokugan, magic of rokugan, the three last being the d20 version of rokugan that allow them to now release dual-stat system.

It doesn't seems to me that Way of the Samurai would be in competition with Chris Pramas handbook, though he'll need the the sales figures of both OA and the main Rokugan d20 book to know if it mights be a viable product.

and correct me if I'm wrong, but IIRC Kara-Tur wasn't set in the Forgotten Realms at its launch, so maybe Green Ronin could get some sort of restricted license on Kara-Tur considering the number of old setting that get updated, maybe the same kind of contract that was made for dragonlance could be made, allowing WotC to look at the main book to ensure an eventual compatibility in unforseen future to the FR setting, I think its possible considering the many reference Ravenloft had to other setting in earlier edition and that WotC clearly said that they didn't want to expand product once they were released (except for the Forgotten Campaign setting), so it's unlikely that they'll produce a Kara-Tur setting, as it will need OA or reproduces the rules in it (the majority of those who already have OA wouldn't buy it then), and if WotC want to include links to FR, they'll alienates part of their customers too. So keep your hopes high! Their is almost no chances that WotC release such a product, but another company might! Anythings is possible:D !

Although it wasn't initially set for FR Toril (and definitely not set for GH Oerth) it eventually became so and have been accepted by many (not all, but many).

As for requirements, all you basically need is the Rokugan book, IMHO. They practically REVISE everything the OA rules have been presented that you necessarily don't need that product to run a Rokugan d20 campaign. A proverbial "spit in the face of the author," if you ask me.

The samurai book never got further than the outline stage. With both OA and Rokugan out there now, it's unlikely I'll revive this project anytime soon.

IMNSHO:p, you need OA and rokugan, (creatures of rokugan and magic of rokugan are almost must have to complete the setting, especially on magic, and magic of rokugan use the random table for magic items from OA), to use Way of the samurai; and the "special thanks to james wyatt for his wonderfull work on oriental adventures" in the 3 d20 books on Rokugan speak for itself.

Many L5R monster haven't been reproduced in Monster of Rokugan like some Onis, the Onikage, or the Pennaggolan (a monster used in the tomb of iuachiban in L5R), the maho tsukai prestige class is unlikely to appear anywhere else, etc...
They only changed the things James Wyatt had to do to make L5R a D&D setting (gold piece requirment for the ancestral daisho is almost an aberation in L5R, etc...).

Thanks for the answer!

My suggestion to you, Mr. Pramas, is to go back to your Chinese Wuxia root, back to the days of ... Dragon Fist.

I'm sure you can create a lovely Chinese-flavored campaign setting for use with your Jade Dragons & Hungry Ghosts monster supplement. :D
