Mannahnin
Scion of Murgen (He/Him)
Good memory on the EC Comics call out. Dr. Strange definitely had some influence as well, including famously a couple of images from OD&D being traced from/ "inspired by" images from Dr. Strange comics.True, but at the time the Comics Code was still current, albeit slightly liberalized in the 70s, whereas the Hays Code had been abolished for about 20 years. Plus, for all that movies were far bigger overall, comics were near and dear to the nerd culture D&D grew out of (and came to partially define); I believe Gygax himself mentioned the old EC horror titles in the original Appendix N (notably at the center of the controversy that spawned the Code), and elsewhere expressed admiration for early Doctor Strange, so almost certainly he was familiar with it.
We previously discussed the negative influence of a doctor on Dungeons & Dragons--Dr. Thomas Radecki, who used court cases to advocate that D&D was dangerous to society. But there is another, fictional doctor who strongly influenced D&D spells and magic items and who is now experiencing a resurgence thanks to a Marvel movie: Doctor Strange.
That's Strange!
The influence of comic books on Dungeons & Dragons is a footnote in the game's history but...- talien
