SAVAGE TIDE ADV. PATH - Total Party Kill

First Post
So, it has happened! A TPK. That's TOTAL PARTY KILLED, if you somehow didn't know that.

I am running the SAVAGE TIDE ADVENTURE PATH. Not much of a spoiler here, but I'll say it JUST in case.

So did, in depths of Parrot Island's underground lair, ravenous zombies slay our heroes after they were lured to the island and trapped within it's dark underhalls.

The fallen are...

Veddar Gall, a Human Ranger valiantly fought the undead, easily killing the mjority of the undead.

Rexam Darkspittle, a Half-Orce Urban Brawler (urban barbarian), was doomed from the start of the campaign.

Jericho, a half-elven sorcerer, knew it was all over when his familiar was snatched out of the air and eaten by a zombie in one round.

Kali Oakenheel, a elven druid, who the party wished had been a cleric...

So they are fallen. The heroes are dead, long live the heroes!

(Side note, I have not had a TPK in a long time, easily 15+ years. One of my players (Rob, aka TracerBullet42 here on ENWorld) was all but jumping up and down in excitment over the idea of them all getting wiped out. (Yeah, he needs help.))

Next week their new characters will be picking up where the others left off...which will likely lead to them fighting their old ...undead... selves.

And yes, none of the newly made characters are clerics...

Zombies? Am I going to regret making a favored soul instead of a cleric for the game we start this weekend? (I thought there'd be minimal undead in this AP, given the last one).

I was going to suggest posting to Paizo's STAP Obits, but looks like you posted there already...

Poor Rexam...your name was stolen from the side of a can of coke, and you lasted only about as long as a 24 pack...

But it was fun! Never been part of a TPK before...

Cool! You know, we ran that encounter last week, and it was ridiculously easy for my group. They more or less holed up in one room while the zombies were swarming from all directions, and they did excellently. The dwarven dragon shaman (AC monkey) took a lot of hits, while the goliath just sliced through them. And the Cleric did his thing with his holy symbol, which made things perfect. About the only time the group had trouble under there was with the crabs - they almost destroyed the party rogue in one round.

Having the cleric makes the zombie encounter overtly easy I would think.

As for the crabs, the sorcerer nailed them with SLEEP and the gorup Coup'd them out and then ate them for din-din.

It was funny. The group saw the body floating in the water, and one of the players said "no way we're going in there. Let's try to lasso it with a rope". So, the rogue (with the highest dex) is on the shore, saying she's "one or two feet from the water" trying to lasso the body... of course, the entry says "the crabs attack anything that approaches within five feet", so they all swarmed her. She was knocked down to -7 before she could shout "yikes! Crabs!"

After taking her down, they did some damage to the Dragon Shaman (who has a 22 AC, fer cryin' out loud), and really beat on the Goliath. Those five lousy crabs did so much more damage than the zombies.

Funnily enough, the cleric forgot that he HAD turn undead until the Heucuva came in. But the group was doing such a good job killing zombies that he only turned the baddie when the baddie used Cause Fear on the Goliath (and boy, did he run!). I think it'd be safe to say that the party would have had no problem with that fight, even if the Cleric weren't in the group. But these things run differently for each group, I guess.

All this talk about clerics makes me wonder. Since zombies have twice the hit dice of the creature they were when alive, and have low CR's even their HD is sky-high, they tend to actually be amongst the toughest creatures for a cleric to turn. What kind of zombies are we talking about here? 2 HD? What level are the characters supposed to be?
