Saving a single paladin from four grappling ogres

I easily could because he has Great Cleave and I don't think he's going to be using that against 70-hit point large ogres. (If Cleave preserved the damage bonus from Smite Evil, though, he probably could!)

Using the Smite Evil on multiple attacks will required the burning uses of Action Points.

After that, a full week on recovery to use that ability again.

Oh, I didn't realize Cleave meant "at the same base attack bonus." I had thought the +3 to hit would carry through even though the +12 damage did not. Thanks for clearing that up.

Grease is a good grapple tactic for PCs, but it wouldn't help here because using Escape Artist is a standard action. As a "solo monster," the paladin can't afford to give up a standard action the way he would as a PC. He'd lose all his attacks.

Is the 3.0 text for Grease different from the 3.5 version?
Grease :: d20srd.org

"A creature wearing greased armor or clothing gains a +10 circumstance bonus on Escape Artist checks and on grapple checks made to resist or escape a grapple or to escape a pin."

I guess I got that wrong because our group only ever uses Escape Artist so Grease only ever helped on Escape Artist. So slick armor would be a cheap 3700 gold out, but it doesn't seem very paladin-y. Thanks for the rules knowledge.

Hmm, well assuming you are willing to add a 1st level sorcerer and trained dire porcupine or suitable replacement. The sorcerer has a potion of invisibility and will drink it. Whenever the paladin is grappled the sorcerer casts Benign Transportation and switches the paladin for the dire porcupine. The sorcerer is not attacking and does not break invisibility.

I just learned that you do have to make Concentration checks when you drink potions. So a potion of protection from evil wouldn't be any more effective than him just casting the spell on himself. I also said above drinking the potion was a move action. Oops.
