Not sure, exactly. I just figured she was so ugly, and obnoxious that most people running more standard businesses wouldn't be interested in hiring her, so...how else is such a poor girl to make ends meet? At least historically, when girls couldn't find any way to make a living, and they were desperate, regardless of whether they were beautiful or ugly--being a courtesan and working for a brothel seems to have been a common way for girls to survive.
