Say you are selected for PLAYTEST...

Say you get the call from Wizards to Playtest 4E and you are not planning on picking up the game let alone ever playing it. Maybe you just love 3.0/ 3.5- Maybe you are angry about WoTC grubbing money- Maybe you like another system better- Maybe (and most likely) you lurk and post on these forums and others to "Stir up" a little chaos and look smart and kewl.

Would you still accept the task and try out the game?

Of course I would, so I could have more specific things to gripe about. But In reality I am excited about 4e and pretty much everything I've seen about it is something I like.

Particularly the Swiss Staffwandtomeorbs. ;)

If I were resolutely anti-4e, and offered the chance to playtest, then I would turn it down. I see no reason to either assist WotC in an endeavour I disagree with, or alternately to get in the way of producing the best game possible for people who do want it.

If I were anti-4e but 'persuadable' then I would accept, and try to shift the game towards a form I would be more likely to accept. Well, except...

In actual fact, regardless of my feelings on the matter, I know I don't have the time that would be required to playtest as it should be done. And, knowing I couldn't do a good job, I would be forced to respectfully decline the opportunity to playtest.

Wouldn't you accept the task to 'see' the rules to decide if you like them better? Make your choice after the rough product arrives?

By the way, I love those who do things to purposely screw stuff up! I think they do it for laugh and find out how it impacts them later. Of course they can claim that they just don't care but then why even post here on this site or others (the WOTC forums are full of these folks).

No.

Depends. If I preferred 3e, I'd see no reason. If I was angry about WotC or trolling, then yes. I'd take up one of those playtesting spaces and not do anything with it. Give them some hassle. If I were a short-sighted troll, I'd take the whole playtest material and make it public. ;)

I don't know whether something like this would happen, though, as I'm sure that they didn't choose completely randomly from all registered users. It's likely they weeded out those who only hung out in the magic forum and stuff like that, those who caused trouble in the past, and I guess those they don't like. I guess if you spoke out against 4e or Wizards, you were right out.

Of course! I'm not sold on 4th Ed, but I would love a chance to give it a whirl, and to give my players the same. Having input into the game would be awesome - as it would give me a chance to see how it could affect my games, and, as my players are experts at finding the flaws and imbalances in any system, a chance to get them plugged before publication. Yep, I'd do it - though I would still be running my current 3.5 campaigns too :D
