D&D 4E Scale and facing in 4e?

"facing" has always been implied by dragons. Its the nature of fighting a monster with a tail sweep and wing buffets.

I suspect though, the face/reach of most monsters will be the same. I can't think of a similar system to use.

Plus, Deserts of Desolation (the DDM next line) will be 3.5/4e compatible, and I can't see them changing the scale of the minis and still keep DoD "DDM 2.0/4e" compatible.

I desperately do not want to see facing brought into 4E. It's an added level of complexity that I believe the game neither wants nor needs, and it's yet another obstacle for those who prefer to play without minis.

There was also mention of the word "backstab" which seems to imply facing. I can't remember where. I think it was on one of the blogs. I'm not too keen on the idea.

That might just be an old-timer referring to sneak attack though. In previous editions the equivalent was backstab, and sneak attack is still referred to as backstab in our group. We're likely not alone.

Yeah, I know. I"m an old timer as well. I don't miss sneak attack. At all.
EDIT: And I never made that mistake but perhaps it's because I liked sneak attack so much better.

I gotta disagree with you there. I never found facing complex, nor have I ever met anyone who thought it was too complex. The usual complaints about facing that I recall were always along the lines of "Why the hell can't I turn to face him for a freaking minuete!?!" And I think the concept of the immediate action solves that problem neatly. "Any time a new opponent threatens your space in melee you may take an immediate action to change your facing." Well... immediate actions and the fact that the 1 min combat round is dead and buried. :D

Does anyone think that's too complex?
