Scaling Pets, Mounts, and Animal Companions

Giving pets, mounts, and animal companions some benefits as the main character advances might give them a little more weight in the campaign.

I think the default rules work best to prevent the 'entourage' effect some players can create to the detriment of the rest of the party. However that is not always a problem with smaller group of characters or even solo adventurers.

Some general guidelines: if the HD of the creature is the same or higher than the 'master' no changes.
If the HD of the creature is one lower than the 'master' than the creature gets its first HD maxed.
Once the HD is two or more lower it gains additional HD up to the 'master's HD less one plus it gains an Ability Score Increase (or feat) when it hits 4,8,12,16 HD. The ASI only apply when the HD gain is based on advancement. For example, a 5 HD Dire Wolf gets the first ASI at 8 HD when the 'master' is 9th. A Warhorse or Riding Horse gets an ASI at 4 HD when the owner is 5th level.

Summoned creatures might be advanced in this way as well.
