scarred lands

I have been offline for a few days and since I didn't see a single scarred lands thread I thought I would start a new one.

Has anybody used any research rules for spells or magic items? I have a coulpe of PC's in my game who are or will be taking craft item feats. I am not being so liberal as the PHB when it comes to craft item feats. You will get to know how to make 1 item when you 1st take the feat, any other item formulas must be researched independently. I was thinking that if you research several simmilar items then the research time and cost would go down because you already have a basic understanding of how it works, you are just researching the specifics. liburary size and type will factor into the time and DC's (per the quintessential wizard). I'm curious if anyone else has done anything similar?
my group is currently level 2 but they are on the way to the Phylactric Vault so I'm sure it will come up relitively soon.

Sanackranib - I've not used those rules, but, as far as I'm concerned, limiting them to one known recipe per feat is absolutely brilliant. I think that the biggest complaint over the item creation feats is that it gives the PC's access to just about anything, and this does away with it nicely. I am so swiping that for my campaign! :D

item creation

it really doesn't limit them as much as you might at first think. they can still research any item they meet the prerec's for. also I let them learn a new item every 3 levels. the research they do as they go I feel justifies that. and I am a firm believer that you should get better as you advance. since they are currently at the fixed xp of 250 per session the characters should be fun to play for quite some time and creatures like orcs/goblins and the odd ogre will continue to be a menace as well

Yeah. Now, magic item creation feats will be even rarer, and only NPCs will ever go for them instead of Metamagic feats. Woo!

This isn't always a bad thing. Personally I think San has a nice idea. One which I might use in a modified format. Mainly in that a) you have seen this item used before. b) you have the proper spells and can cast them. c) if you live in a city that breaths magic (say like hollowfaust) you can gain knowledge of more item creations equal to twice your primary spellcasting score modifier. Also increase it to every 4 levels.
