Sci-Fi: Dragon Storm

Pants

First Post
There's a fantasy movie called Dragon Storm that will be showing on this Saturday night on the Sci-Fi channel. It stars Gimli... errr John Rhys Davies ( ;) ) and it has dragons (!) in it. Anyone else heard of this? Anyone going to watch it?

Oh, I'm gonna watch it... been seeing previews for it for a while now... Even gonna tape it, on the off chance it's good, but... I'm not expecting a whole lot.

So unlike the D&D movie, this one won't likely disappoint.

Just read an interview with JRD; he said it's pretty low-budget, but he had a lot of fun -- apparently he loves doing fantasy and sci-fi.
How is his health, BTW? Every time I see him on an entertainment news program, he seems to be using a cane to assist his mobility (mostly a medical cane).

As for this film, it is being directed by Babylon 5's own Vir, Stephen Furst (also in James Belushi's movie, National Lampoon's Animal House). It also starred Maxwell Caulfield (Blue Lagoon, Grease 2) and redhead(?) Angel Boris (Playboy Playmate).

Hmm...

I'd probably won't watch it in theater, but I'll pick up the DVD in the bargain bin, along with Reign of Fire.

He's recoverd. This was the first film he did following his accident. He said it was a bit stiff, but he made it -- apparently the cold in Bulgaria was worse than his stiff back.

He had some interesting observations about safety and stunt work -- he seems to have a pretty good head on his shoulders (and should, if he's been making a living action for 35 years). I found the interview via a link on www.theonering.net, if anyone's interested.

50 minutes to Dragon Storm (SciFI channel, BTW, 9PM Eastern).

There's a truly hideous film on before it called Dragon Fighter -- kind of like Alien, but with a dragon. They must have gone really cheap on editing, or something -- about every five minutes they do this split-screen thing, as if they couldn't decide which shots to use, so they decided to use them all. I'm rooting for the dragon.

I just turned it on, and you're right--it's awful. The dragon does look kind of cool. Kind of. It's just too bad all it does is wander corridors with the same animation.

Off to a good start; BADD would be proud ;)

Though I wonder about dragon motivation. You've just arrived on a new planet and hatched from an interstellar egg. What do you do? Why, plunder the nearest castle, of course.

JRD seems to be carrying it so far. He's great. I hope Peter Jackson does The Hobbit and brings back JRD as Beorn (with Sean Connery as Thorin!).

Aaaand ... the princess can't act. And I do wish they'd teach the ranger to hold a bow properly. But I think the plot was written by a D&D player. :)

Later ... Definitely a D&D player ... why else is there a silk-wearing Oriental monk in a Medieval castle?

I gave up on it about a half hour ago. Pretty tough viewing...

If you guys like it I may tape it and fast forward to good stuff later.

Overall: pretty mediocre. It struggles with the D&D movie to set new levels of lameness.

Still, it had its moments. Lots of D&Dish cliches. Best JRD line: "Well, it's big! That's always good in presents!"

It's most redeeming feature: it's followed by 13th Warrior.
