Sci-fi likes/dislikes

Star Wars

The star wars universe is a sci-fi fantasy setting. There may not be dragons or orcs with ray guns but all the elements are there. Knights, magic powers extra. I like star wars but its not the kind of sci-fi I like to play. Has anyone played the Traveler D20 game?

I played classic Traveller back in the old days. Still have all the little booklets. I really enjoy the setting - lots of places to explore, if that's what you want, and lots of opportunities for just about any other type of adventure, from warfare to diplomacy to grifting to what-have-you.

That first post made me feel like I was standing too close to the speakers at a concert... ;)

I'm not a huge fan of sci-fi anymore. Some near-future stuff interests me from a gaming standpoint - biotech, some cyber stuff - but starships blasting through space and alien worlds with enigmatic fish-people just don't captivate me.

I love star wars. I have started games in recent years but they never really got off the ground. I want to give it a go again. I am giving the players an option Star Wars or Dragonstar.

Having just watched the first (and only...) season of Firefly this past week, I can't help but think that it would make a good game universe: familiar planets, familiar tropes, enough weirdness to be fun (hooray for psionics....), and no aliens. Provided no aliens is your thing. Also, hand-waving inter-planetary travel is a must.

Firefly would make a good setting as would any of Joss' worlds. I want to check out the Buffy and Angel games. Off topic but has anyone played them?

I hate it when a group of characters have developed a connection between them, worked to free a planet and restore one PC to his birthright as ruler and then have two other PCs who have been doing weird things to make money so they can develop a weird battle ship and start a war in another galaxy.

in their first battle with the new super weapon they miss the enemy fleet...... and end up destroying the entire galaxy all the other PCs were in.

:\

I like playing oddball aliens - one guy had his Traveller campaign as the ancient history of his D&D campaign. I played the ancester race of brownies and leprechauns. That was fun.

I was actually discussing the distinction between various styles of sci-fi with one of my confederates recently. I am personally a huge fan of the STAR WARS universe, and I love the game, but it feels like more a fantasy in sci-fi clothing, if you know what I mean. I have been thinking about developing a setting in the style of The Chronicles of Riddick, which doesn't involve a lot of aliens. The few non-human elements are more like seriously evolved human offshoots.... I think it would make a very kewl premise for a game setting.

Have you read Lois Bujolds Nexus books? That would be a fun place to set a game. There is a GURPS supplement for it in the works, but they STILL don't have a release date. *shakes fist at SJ games*

I like all kinds of Sci-Fi roleplay, from hard to sci-fantasy. I've adventured in Traveller (each incarnation), Universe, Rifts, Mechwarrior, Mekton, Gamma World (original), Shadowrun, Star Hero, Paranoia, the original Prime Directive, and (one of my faves) Space 1889. That list doesn't include ones I own but haven't played yet, like Spaceship Zero.

The setting/style doesn't matter much- give me an interesting bunch of gamers and a good GM and I'll FIND a way to have fun.

What type of sci-fi do you like to play as an RPG? What kind of stuff relay makes you mad when you play a sci-fi game? What stuff do you relay like?
It depends...

Sometimes I like Star Trek, sometimes I like Star Wars. Sometimes I like the X-Wing, other times the Colonial Viper. I like when everyone is human in BattleTech, and oftenttimes there are more unusual sentient beings like Traveller.

Sometimes I like to see the good in Humaniti, sometimes I prefer their worst.
