Sci-fi likes/dislikes

While I like real nuts & bolts scifi, with hard science as a basis, but I also greatly enjoy space opera. David Weber's "Honor Harrington" series is the best example of the genre currently. I'd love to see that setting translated into RPG form (I'd prefer d20, but it doesn't have to be). Weber's books set in the Starfire setting are also great space opera.

I saw an Honor Harrington RPG or setting book in the latest Previews, so it's already in the works.

Quicklink is doing it; it is supposed to bear some resemblance to their T20 engine.

Holy crap!

That sounds like a blast!

I'll bet it has a rockin' soundtrack, as well!
Yes it is, and yes it does. :) Picking out the music for a particular encounter is half the fun...!

WayneLigon - Lemme check that Previews...OK, the June Previews has listed the Saganami Island Tactical Simulator - http://www.star-ranger.com/Works.htm#Sits - and the Honorverse Ships of the Fleet Calendar (which I'm gonna get). Did it appear in an earlier Previews, or have you gotten the July issue?

Psion - Quicklink? Hmm. To be honest, I dunno how I feel about them doing it. They haven't done a whole lot with the T20 game after the initial big hardcover, beyond some downloadable material. I was just thinking the other day that doing such a game using d20 Modern and Future would be kinda cool. I think I'd rather have it look like that than T20, but I don't hate T20.

It depends. I can easily go for hard sci-fi as I can for sci-fantasy. Sometimes I'm in the mood for a game that stresses the science in sci-fi, but other times I like Star Wars and Dragonstar styled sci-fi. As long as the setting is interesting, I don't really care.

The only thing that really bothers me in sci-fi is when you have a guy with a sword and a ray-gun. I mean really...you have something that weighs like one pound and burns holes in stuff and a big, sharp, heavy, dangerous stick. What's with the stick?

2 reasons for the "stick."

#1) Eventually, like every other firearm ever invented, it will run out of ammo or power or whatever makes it make holes in/otherwise incapacitate opponents. Then it becomes a 1lb throwing hammer, and a sword is generally better than a 1lb throwing hammer.

Look at WW2. Rifles, Guns, Grenades, Tanks, Nuclear Bombs...and every soldier had a knife or bayonette as a weapon of last resort.

Modern policemen: Rifles, Shotguns, tasers, pistols...and nightsticks.

Any melee weapon is usable as long as you have strength in your body.

#2) Sometimes you want to do something other than pop/blast/burn a hole in someone/something, especially as a primary option. You still want to be threatening, but with limited force.

After all, would you rather use a sword or an atomic raygun against your opponent...when only 2" of steel protect you from absolute zero and hard vacuum?

Well for me it's Space Opera in my homebrew Spacemaster-Setting. The chars start on earth at present time, and everything they discover brings them on a step further - most will say "baaah, spacemaster" but for my newbie-group it is a lot of fun (especially since i stripped most over-complex rules i guess). Apart from that we play Starwars D20 with a good GM, which is why i enjoy it i guess - although i play a soldier armed with a spear, stabbing enemies to death, so no real SciFi-feel here. Apart from that i played in a Fading Suns Campaign which i like d a lot, but that neither was SciFi for me - maybe because of my brother battle killing everything with a sword.

Dougal, still looking for his Plasma Repeater Rifle

Guten Morgen Herr Scholl. ;)

I would have felt honoured to have joined you in any of those campaigns. How's the Dark Space stuff getting on?
