Pick your favorite version of Traveller (Original or Mega for me thank you very much), or good old poor abandoned Alternity.

I've always found Traveller to be the most versatile scifi RPG, esp. the d20 versions because you can import stuff you like from other d20 games.

I know I'm going to be called a heathen especially because I generally loath GURPS but Transhuman Space is probably the only Sci-Fi RPG that comes close to dealing with contemporary Sci-Fi.

If you want something that isn't space opera then this is definately the book to pick up. It's also a Powered by GURPS product so you don't even need GURPS proper to run it (in contains the rules for GURPS Lite).

Took me a bit to find it again, its called Dark Horizons. Being made by a small independant company. Demo'ed one of their video games and one of the dev people mentioned it in chat one day so I asked. Sounded cool but they are still making it. Mentioned they would be looking for testers so I told em keep me in mind, who knows.

we had fun with Shatterzone, but i don't know if it was a great game, per say. if you can find leading edges ALIENS you can get yourself a character meat-grinder of a fun time.

I don't know if that is considered sci-fi. More like the predecessor to Urban Arcana.
