Space Opera? Who puts that out? Do you have a link to it?
Here's where I got it: http://www.drivethrurpg.com/catalog/product_info.php?products_id=583

There are several titles in the series. I think it came out in the mid-late 80's. Has a kind of Star Frontiers/Foundation flavor to it, but I haven't dug too deeply.

Here's some other ones that I picked up:

Casino Galactica:

Oh! The old Fantasy Games Unlimited Space Opera! I was thinking that it was something new. It came out in the early 1980's and it is out of print. I don't think that FGU is even in business anymore. As for the game itself, Space Opera was a complex game, with *very* detailed character creation, starship construction and combat rules. The game designers suggested that players invest in a pretty good calculator before starting.

You might want to pick it up if your a game rules collector but don't bother otherwise.

I'll second the recommendation of GURPS Transhuman space, and follow that up with GURPS Space in general - For most science fiction games, if there wasn't already a game out there for the setting, I'd start with GURPS and trim. The exceptions would be more cinematic/less realistic games, which I might modify BESM or another generic system for.

I've got a copy of Star Hero, but haven't had a chance to read it yet - I suspect it'll be cool but GURPS has the advantage of a large amount of Space-related books available.

I play Traveller. I am currently playing in a PBeM campaign (read the story hour linked below) and running a FTF campaign. I frequently play Traveller at gaming conventions, and have even run some demo adventures myself.

i have played traveller/megatraveller for many years. i do not currently play it as my group is more interested in fantasy than SF. one guy in my current group has also played gurps long ago and would like to do so again (i had played too, but only gurps fantasy-esque stuff) but the other two players are too inexperienced to switch, meta-gaming wise. :(

Well, I'll throw my hat -- err, radiation-shielded space helmet -- into the ring. Our d20 Future-powered setting, Dawning Star, is in the editing phase.

Huh - looks interesting. I'll keep an eye open to see how it goes, although I don't have a copy of d20 future.

How can you recommend games that you dont play? Your not playing them for a reason, or so I would think.

Well I think you'll find a lot of people recommend games they don't play because of reasons like not having group, the time, or have other commitments like work, raising children, etc.

I only play one night a week and can't always make that, currently my group is playing Call of Cthulhu, but I feel free to recommend games I've played and enjoyed in the past, or hope to play in the future.

Heck I've only played 3.0 D&D as a player twice, and by twice I mean two sessions not two campaigns. Thanks to time, finding players and raising a baby boy.

Has anyone played Space Opera? I snatched up a few of the PDFs and it seems like an interesting game...at least to steal from.

In it's day Space Opera was the greatest fun I ever had as a DM. I played with a very fast and loose style and the game was so successful that by word of mouth our gaming group grew over the course of nine months from 5 to 13 people. It was a complete blast.

The rules were over-complicated and pretty horrible by todays standards, but the high-octane style of that game is something that I'd love to get back to playing again.

There were some neat touches in the setting (BRINT and BOSS always had a big showing IMC) and one poor wookie PC was legendary for being hit in location 27-40 *so* many times. (groin, if you were wondering).

Ah, happy memories!
