Ok time to chime in again after some searching or refreshing memories that is.
Tenich Muyo: Somehow I cannot see it and I have the show and movies
El 'Hazard the Magnificent world: I would agree
Full Metal Alchemist: I see that more steampunk than what I'm looking for
Vampire Hunter D: I'm not sure, yet
Bravestarr, Serenity and Trigun is more space western than sword and planet, very different subgenre.

Yeah, it's not great, but it is miles beyond Blackstarr (which would fit the criteria here pretty well, actually). Also, if we're looking at cartoons, try Bravestarr, and Visionaries.

Good call on Blackstar! Earth astronaut crashes in alien planet and becomes barbarian-like warrior with magic weapon certainly fits the bill!

It might be for the Dying Earth subgenre. Yor, Hunter from the Future, Knights, Vampire Hunter D and Bakashi movie "Wizards would fit the Dying Earth.
