Scooby Doo Cthulhu!

Nebulous

Legend
So i think i'm going to run a True 20 version of Cthulhu later this year with Shadows of Cthulhu and the San Francisco sourcebook by Chaosium. Has anyone else tried the rules for Shadows of Cthulhu? I think it looks really great, although i have never played True 20 either.

Any suggestions or warnings? I was going to run it in the 1920s, but the Mystery Machine just wouldn't fit in right so i think i'll bump it up to the groovy 60s. It will episodic, like the cartoon, with Daphne, Fred, Velma and Shaggy solving mysteries and then moving on. Although i think i'll still set it in 1960 San Francisco. This isn't a long term campaign, just a short one, but i really miss me some Cthulhu after finishing Masks of Nyarlathotep a couple years back.

I haven't read Shadows of Cthulhu yet, but it's on my list of things to check out. If I get around to it before your game, I'll be sure to post. As for True 20, it's my opinion that it works best for games with low or no powers (i.e., special effects such as magic, super powers, etc), so it should work pretty well for Cthulhu-esque mysteries.

Cool Frank! I originally was going to run scenarios from the SF book, but it might be just as easy (and fun!) to model adventures after actual episodes. I got a lot to consider...

This reminded me of some plug-ins for Jared Sorensen's Sqeam RPG. . .

Granted, they won't be of much use to you for a True 20 game, but if you ever pick up Squeam (it's like $3.00), they're a lot of fun. I especially liked playing the Cthulhu variant.

You should definitely check out the d20 Modern mini-game Hijinx found in POLYHEDRON #158 on the flip-side of DUNGEON #99:

DUNGEON #99/POLYHEDRON #158

It's written for d20 Modern, but you can easily port stuff into True20. It's got a very Josie and the Pussycats/Scooby Doo vibe.

I have Shadows of Cthulhu for True20 and I thought it was really well done.

Also, True20Chick (EN World's D&DChick) did some d20 Call of Cthulhu conversions to True20, but her Web site is now gone. The original thread is still up on the True20 Message boards though:

True20 Adventure Roleplaying; View topic - Truethulhu....

Hope this helps - sounds like fun!

B-)

Juuuuuuust in case you really want to run the 1920s thing, there was some discussion of just such a campaign- sans Scooby, Shaggy, Velma, Fred and Daphne- a while back.

FWIW, a talking dog in a Cthulhu campaign is going to be met with a great deal of trepidation...

Perhaps he could be recast as an African Grey Parrot? The one in It Waits had all the best lines...most notably "Uh-Oh!" whenever the bird detected the ancient evil being in the vicinity.

At least in 1960s San Francisco, you can have celebrity cameos like in the cartoon. I'd replace Sonny & Cher with Jerry Garcia and Grace Slick and the Addams Family with the Manson Family, but I'd still keep Don Knotts and Phyllis Diller because they're just trippy as is. B-)

Paul Lynde. C'mon...you know you wanna!

Oh HELL! What would Timothy Leary see on LSD...in a Mythos-infused Haight-Ashbury?

And with THAT in mind, did you know that "godflesh" is a translation of a term some Native American tribes used for peyote? So...which god might they see when ingesting magic mushrooms in Mythos-touched worlds?
