Scorpion King: Verdict?

Saw it last friday.

Thought it was absolutely wretched. Seemed like they were trying to make an upscale 2hour long version of Xena to me (though oddly I kinda liked Xena sometimes).

I was really hoping it would compare to Conan the Barbarian...a movie i really liked (I rented out Conan saturday to compare and Conan was far and away a much better movie).

I know the fantasy genre is generally difficult to make into a movie but was it necessary to make such a god awful movie.

Dredging up the dead...

Sorry for bringing this thread back again, but I just saw the movie last week and I needed to add my two cents.

It was an episode of Hercules. Hell, the character of the Scorpion King WAS Hercules. All of the dialogue could have been spoken by Sorbo with little change. His reaction to kids and animals are even consistent with the character (the Scorpion King must be the nicest assassin in history).

And the supporting cast (Amazons, Duncan, comic relief, sorceress, kids, and inventor) seemed ripped right out of the tv.

I wouldn't be surprised to learn that the script was an unused 2-part episode.

I think that I wouldn't be as critical of the film if they had jettisoned most of the supporting cast. Did we really need Duncan, the amazons, and the inventor? All they did was weaken the Scorpion King character. He needed a virtual army to help him do what most action heroes would have done on their own.

Conan didn't need gunpowder to beat anyone.
