I do believe he used that WoW line in a positive way.

Interesting thread indeed.

For me, it's just frustrating. I'm a SRPG junkie (have Disgaea I & II, Phantom Brave, FFT, La Pucelle Tactics) and I've played WoW as well.

If you had told me pre-4E that Disgaea plays like WoW, I would've been the first to tell you that you were just plain WRONG.

Yet now, 4E which really does play like a SRPG (which admittedly as a fan, I'm biased for) gets compared to WoW by pretty much EVERYONE?

Dude, Disgaea and Final Fantasy Tactics aren't THAT unknown.

Yeah, well, maybe that's because EVERYONE knows WoW. ;)

Besides WoW is just a term for MMO-RPG at that point... much like Walkman is a term for a portable cassette player, regardless of brand. ;)

But thats my point. Saying 4e plays like WoW is akin to saying that Poker is the same thing as Old Maid. They both use cards and involve bluffing but that's pretty much it.

I agree. D&D 4e is like a certain type of computer game in actual play, just not a whole lot like WoW. IMO, of course. That being said, I have no issue with this and have recently been enjoying the heck out of DSII and Shining Force II (so much so, that certain features of it are showing up in my Risus fantasy setting).

You know, I have to agree here. Far more than storytelling rpgs, I like tactical RPGs and Miniature wargames. The Tome of Battle and the Warlock were my absolute favorite parts of 3rd edition. 4e kind of feels like it was made specifically for me.

Anima Tactics has been my mini ruleset du jour recently, because it does what I want a mini game to do. But I think 4e might give me more of the tactical miniature gaming I want.

Now if only the WoW minis would come out.... I must have a murloc village! And without paying 60 dollars for the WoW boardgame.
