Scouting and AD&D

I've run D&D games with scouting four different times. I first always make sure that the parents approve, and that we also do not play when scouts are around whose parents do not approve.

My first attempt bombed. It was back in 1982, and unfortunately one of the players was an Assistant Scoutmaster that had worked as a surveyor for over 30 years. He wanted a level of detail on the outdoors that surpassed by ability as a DM, and even when I got him to calm down he still played at a level far above the heads of the scouts, who soon lost interest.

My next attempt was more successful, in 1987, when I ran a scenario that had worked at two conventions and both of my regular gaming group. It involved the party setting up an ambush to stop a small army, and used close to 200 miniatures in a fully 3D setting. It worked well for both the players and scouts and leaders who were just spectators.

The next time was in 1991, and was just with the older kids and a few leaders. We did a short campaign during summer camp that was heavy on the role playing. Two players and one leader from this game later found their way into my weekly gaming group.

The final attempt was last year, as one of the other leaders was very much into gaming, and had joined my original gaming group. Unfortunately, he was too much into the game, and didn't know when to stop talking about it to the point that he got the Scoutmaster ticked off, and then banned the game altogether. That leader left in a huff, the end result being that I now can't do anything game related on campouts any more.
