The problem you are having, is you have some assumptions, and are trying to nitpik the exact wording of the rules. And the wording has plenty of play in it.

I'm not having a "problem" and I'm not picking nits. I'm simply calling attention to the fact that the DMG is poorly worded.



"Plenty of play" is exactly what is needed, on our part, since the DMG is not as precise as it could have been.

I think we're kinda saying the same thing though. I can accept your interpretation of the word "read" as meaning "not read from beginning to end, but just glance and say a key phrase." That's a perfectly nifty, creative interpretation. If only you had written the DMG in the first place!

No offense intended, but I honestly think that this particular case, the DMG was poorly interpreted, as opposed to poorly worded. Try not to read too much into the flavor text. It's kinda funny though because many people want more flavor text, yet flavor text tends to cause the most rules debates.
