If it's an NPC, just make it happen. In fact, sometimes do things like this to your players. Make obscure magics, strange creatures, and beyond weird occurences.

It makes those characters that are shuffling through their books looking for the answers completely confused. Believe me, it's tons of fun, and it keeps em guessing .

The best is when one of them says he knows where something's from when you completely made the situation up.

I have to agree, just make it happen.
Its an NPC doing something off screen, correct?
When they start to get some idea of what has happened, throw out a bunch of clues, see what ideas the players come up with. I bet your players will believe what has happened if they guess something close to what you decide upon.
