Scrying and the delivery boy..

Quick question:

The Pcs get a mysterious package containing The Mystic Clue. They decide to use it to scrying on its previous owner...

Do they see the mailman/delivery boy/courier hawk/etc that brought it.. or do they see the one who sent it.

I guess I am asking what do you consider ownership to be in terms of such spells and effects and why?

Just curious,

Spells are smart, and moreover are made of magic, so I'd go with a complex interpretation -- the last person to both possess the item and consider him, her or itself the item's owner is the last owner. Intentionality counts. :)

There are a couple of key questions...

Does the information on who sent the package help or hinder your game/ plot?
You could reasonably use the point that the "package" has had many "possessors", and thus they would randomly scry on any previous owners. Each would be allowed a saving throw with a +10 modifier.

Was the package a "possession" or "garment"?
If it was simply the severed finger of a party loved one that is being used for intimidation, or a clue to steer them in the right direction, then no.

Having no knowledge of the person they are scrying on, and if you allow using the "package" as a possession, the Scryee would still get a +6 bonus on their saving throw.

The main thing is, does knowing who sent the package help or hinder your plot line? Roll the saving throw behind a screen...
