Scrying casting time and items

Would a use-activated item that uses scry be able to bypass the 1 hour casting time? Is there anything that can do that?

Yes. An item which can do Greater Scrying.

Scrying is an IMMENSLY powerful tool useful in innumerable situations. The only reason it's so low level a spell is because of the casting time they put on it.

They wanted everyone (even non-high level gamers) to have a crack at it, but didn't want to ruin every DM (or player's) day by having a spy on command spell.

But greater scrying is just that.

There are a couple items already that do that, though you won't like their prices. I guarantee. :)

Well, this item is for an NPC guildmaster of the Shadow Thieves, so price probably won't be an issue. Do you know the items offhand?

Well I had assumed that the Mirror of Mental Prowess dcollins mentioned used greater scrying, which in fact it does not. It uses scry it says as a crystal ball, crystal ball entry says it uses scry as the spell (which has a 1 hour casting time).

As dcollins pointed out in the other thread, you could rule that wonderous items do not follow casting time rules, especially if you payed 175,000 gp for the Mirror. But unfortunately, as long as the item is based on scry and specifically says "as the scry spell" it's going to have a one hour casting time IMC.

So apparently there aren't any. But if he's the Shadowmaster of the Shadow Thieves just have him use one of his underlings to cast greater scrying for him or make an item of it using the DMG pricing rules.

I don't have my FRCS infront of me, but the Night Masks have 3 people in their organization who are capable of a Greater Scrying. I'm sure the Shadow Thieves have at least one. :)

Don't wondrous items have standard action to use? Spell Completion and Spell Trigger items, on the other hand, specify that if the spell has a longer casting time, use that instead. That's because using those items is the equivalent of casting a spell, whereas wondrous items aren't. They just do it. So I would say that since crystal balls are wondrous items they require a standard action to use. If, on the other hand, you had a staff with scrying, it would take 1 hour. Remember that wondrous items don't follow spells verbatum. They simply have effects which are similar to spells. The crystal ball says that it function like scrying, but greater scrying says that in its description as well. Also, crystal balls break the normal rules for scrying since they can't benefit from other spells (such as see invisibility), not even with a % chance, unless it's enchanted with those spells (in which case it always works).
