Scrying into other planes

Lets say you have an NPC that died in a campaign. The NPC could have been someone important in the campaign or just a town peasant with no importance at all, whichever the case it doesn't matter. Would it be possible to contact that NPC (or their spirit) with a crystal ball via scrying?

On one hand I can see this as a yes because all you need to know is that person's name and a good Scry check. On the other hand, this is slightly different then an actual PC or other physical body in another plane. It is one's spirit.

Thoughts?

P.S. - This came up in a campaign of mine long ago and I never remembered to ask the question on here. For some reason it just popped in my head so I thought I would ask incase it ever came up again.

I think the answer to this must be very campaign specific.

In general I'd say no. Death has changed the character into someone/something you no longer know, nor have a possession/likeness/body part.

Of course in your campaign it could be different, and that would be cool.

This is definitely campaign specific - and it depends a great deal on a couple of questions you get to answer in a fantasy game.

Where do you go after you die?
What happens after you die?

Under the core Greyhawk and FRCS rules - especially given MotP - you COULD do this, and be reaching the "petitioner" that the person has become (IIRC the template name).
