Sean's Picks of the Week (0418-0420) - The Seattle Sprawl, Ninjas, Gear Magical and Mundane, and Exa

This week's Picks feature a lot of "useful stuff for running games," including modern gear for Dark Conspiracy, random magical items for Savage Worlds, and all you could want to know about Seattle in the Shadowrun universe. Then there's the fire-oriented ninja clans of Ninja Crusade and all the over-the-top fantasy of Exalted 3rd Edition. This is the stuff I have for you this week, friends, so let's dive in.

Seattle Sprawl

If you’re a Shadowrun fan, you know Seattle is the most important place in that universe – it’s where the whole thing began, and it’s where everything happens. Catalyst is giving you a “digital boxed set” of All Things Seattle for your 5th Edition running. Folks who buy this get a $10 coupon to buy the physical version later.

It’s the shadowrunning capital of the world for a reason. Seattle offers an unparalleled intersection of corporate, political, and criminal powers. This is where icons are made—like the Ancients, the Halloweeners, the Finnigan Crime Family, the Skraacha, Dante’s Inferno, Renraku Arcology, the Big Rhino, and the Alabaster Maiden. And this is where runners like Dodger, Sally Tsung, Dirk Montgomery, Jake Armitage, Twist, Kellan Colt, and James Kincaid made their names, sometimes made their fortunes, and occasionally experienced horrible losses. This is where you go to test your mettle. This is how you show you’re at the top of the heap.

A sprawl this big can’t be contained in a single book, so we made a box. Inside you’ll find:

  • Emerald Shadows, a book outlining the geography of the sprawl and the notable powers and locations in each district;
  • Ruling the Queen City, a deeper examination of the power and history of Seattle, including a look at the people who rule over the city—and the people who control them;
  • Tangled Threads, holding plot hooks and adventures to help launch or continue your Seattle-based game;
  • Character cards, fully statted out cards of Seattle denizens that can be used as easy-reference NPCs of even pre-generated PCs;
  • Modular map cards, a deck of cards showing maps of different types of rooms that can be combined into a never-ender variety of buildings;
  • Gang reference card, providing a quick listing of gangs of the sprawl, their colors, and where they operate;
  • And a poster-sized map of Seattle like Shadowrun has never seen before.

All this will bring the sprawl to lifew while making it easier for players and gamemasters to dive into the shadowy depths that make Seattle legendary—and see if they can keep their head above water.

The Firebrands

My friend, Eloy Lasanta, is putting out great support for his Ninja Crusade (2nd Edition) product line. This includes revisions of the original sourcebooks for the line.

Flames That Burn Brightly

We are the sparks that incite change, the embers that burn down armies and the blades that cut the strings of corrupt politics. The Ninja Crusade has targeted our kind and we are not the ones to back down. The future is ours to control and will be written in the blood of our enemies.

And Burn with a Righteous Fury

The Firebrands 2nd Edition is the first clanbook for The Ninja Crusade 2nd Edition. Experience the expansive territories, training methods and individual cultures of the Fire-Aspected clans: The Blazing Dancers, who live the dance of fire, and the Virtuous Body Gardeners with their fiery-tempered blades. All the secrets await within for the Izou Empire’s youngest clans.

This Book Includes:

– Learn about all facets of clan life directly from prominent Dancers and Inks

– New clan-specific, elemental and general jutsu, Fighting Styles and even Celestial Animals

– Three new clans that work beside the firebrands: The Gracious Illustrators, The Grey Tigers and the Winds of Aion.

– New Adventure included

– 9 new Pregenerated characters ready to jump into the action!

Exalted 3rd Edition

This is a huge one, burning up the charts and making quite the splash. The Third Edition of Exalted – the over-the-top demi-gods-as-heroes fantasy setting launched by White Wolf and carried on by Onyx Path – is now available.

This is the tale of a forgotten age before the seas were bent, when the world was flat and floated atop a sea of chaos. This is the tale of a decadent empire raised up on the bones of the fallen Golden Age, whose splendor it faintly echoed but could not match. This is a tale of primal frontiers, of the restless dead, of jeweled cities ruled openly by spirits in defiance of Heaven’s law. This is a tale of glorious heroes blessed by the gods, and of their passions and the wars they waged in the final era of legends.

This is your tale. This is Exalted. What legends will they tell of your deeds?

Exalted 3rd Edition depicts both a revitalized and expanded Creation, and the triumphant return of the Solar Exalted—but whether their rebirth will herald the salvation or destruction of the world, none can say. The system redesign takes the best parts of the previous editions and streamlines the mechanics for maximum playability.

Exalted 3rd Edition includes:

  • New Fiction – Read a new tale by original Exalted developer and author Geoff Grabowski.
  • New Artwork – See the Realm in a new light with stunning artwork by both new and classic Exalted artists working under the direction of Maria Cabardo.
  • Expanded Locales – Expand your campaigns with a detailed overview of the sprawling and decadent Second Age of Man. In addition to classic locales such as Chiaroscuro and Nexus, find many new locations not detailed in previous editions, from the treacherous intrigues of Port Calin to the proud warriors of the frigid plains and forests of Medo, held in check only by the iron hand of the Realm.
  • Intrigue and Mystery – Discover a revitalized Realm, still standing at the brink of civil war, but more dangerous than ever before; and the Lunar dominions which harry its borders, seeking redress for ancient crimes while pursuing modern ambitions.
  • Expanded Character Creation – Create and play Solar Exalted characters and compelling mortal heroes with more information and fleshed out details.
  • Combat System – Fight with a new cinematic combat engine, primed to deliver dynamic, exciting, and easily resolved battles between heroes, gods, and armies.
  • Charms – Explore a vibrant new Charm set encompassing both classic Solar powers from previous editions and all-new powers to shift the course of Creation.
  • …and much, much more!

Savagely Useful: Random Magical Items

Here’s one for all the Savage Worlds GMs who could use a little help whenever they need a random magic item for their game. Ross Watson did a fantastic job helping the Sasquatch Game Studio folk with translating their Primeval Thule setting to Savage Worlds. In the course of that work, he came across a need for a fast and efficient system to rapidly generate magic items, which is where I stepped in. They kindly let us pull it out and put it up on our own digital shelves as a stand-alone product to share, so here it is.

You’re running a fantasy game in Savage Worlds, or a game where magic items are a part of the experience. You need some items on the fly, or maybe you’re just really stumped while preparing a session.

Savagely Useful: A Random Magical Item Generator for Savage Worlds is the first in a series of “useful stuff” for Savage Worlds Game Masters. It’s a set of quick-and-easy tables that will help you rapidly create random items – Minor Items, Major Items, and even Relics are possible with this system of tables.

These tables were originally created for the Primeval Thule Campaign Setting for Savage Worlds, which we at Evil Beagle Games helped Sasquatch Game Studio put together.

~~~~~
Gotta make my epilogue quick this week, friends, as I am out the door for day 2 of Conclave of Games, where I am running a number of Savage Rifts demo scenarios.
Hope you have a great weekend!
The Adventure Continues!
