Listen check to overhear centaur & human female conversation: 18+6=24
They started out with a discussion on what the purpose of the 'special missions' might be; however, the centaur soon diverted the conversation and is unabashedly flirting with her. You do learn that her name is Evanelle, and the centaur's is Hector.
Spot check to see if anyone seems to be taking undue note to the mention of the White Rose: 9+9=18
Sense Motive check to notice the same: 11+1=12
It doesn't appear that anyone is listening, or taking undue note of, the half-orc's mention of the White Rose - beyond the senechal's initial reaction, of course. You do notice an unusual amount of crows and ravens perched on the castle walls, most of them staring down into the courtyard; but then again, a larger-than-normal number seem to call the city home. (Knowledge Nature Check 15+8=23) It's not necessarily normal, but not terribly unheard of during times of war. However, you still don't think they are acting
quite as they should.
Knowledge Nature Check: 4+8=12
Nothing natural that you know of matches what the others have said about the White Rose.

Listen Check to overhear what the guard is whispering to the senechal: 8+2=11
You can't quite make it out; you only hear a few words over the talking of the others in the courtyard. "....just received....patrol found him....dead, we're not sure....is gone....proceed....?" At which point the senechal shakes his head and waves the other man back into the castle.

Listen Check to overhear what the guard is whispering to the senechal: 15+11=26
Your sharp hearing picks up the whispers over the talking of the others in the courtyard. "I just received word. A patrol found him less than an hour ago - he's dead, we're not sure what killed him. The parchment is gone. Should we proceed anyway?" At which point the senechal shakes his head and waves the other man back into the castle.

What was all this questioning for, anyways? Had anyone actually been turned away?
The questioning seems to be solely to give the senechal an initial idea of what the individuals can do - you think that perhaps he is judging those that put themselves forward, and on more than just their words. No one thus far has been turned away.
Only two more people volunteer before the senechal gestures to the guards to close the gates and turns back to you. "Everyone, follow me, please." He heads into the interior of the castle, leading you a short distance through a stone-walled corridor into a large room where three men in military uniform await, seated at the head of a large table. This looks to have once been a dining hall - perhaps for the lesser members of Court, as it doesn't seem large enough to seat the entirety of the nobility. Now, judging by the papers, reports and maps strewn about the table, it is the temporary war room.
The senechal walks toward the head of the table so that he stands not far from where the others sit and turns toward you. "As some of you may know, my name is Coel, and I am the King's senechal. He has put me, along with General Brandt," he gestures to one of the seated men, who then stands, "in charge of the war - at least on this front."
"We would like two main teams. In brief, one team will be doing reconnise of the enemy, working with the army, as well as protecting diplomatic missions to the other races and kingdoms. This group we would like to be highly mobile and ready for conflict. The other," his eyes flicker towards Grynth and those of you who had been in conversation with him, but he continues without pause, "will be searching out an artifact that we believe will help us in driving back the Shadowmasters, or at least turning the tide of the war. This may actually be the more dangerous of the two missions, as if they should learn of the artifact, we believe that they will stop at nothing to gain it. As such, it is highly confidential. I have tentatively chosen those that I believe would be best suited as a team for this second mission." He pauses and surveys the group.
"You, priest of Moradin, Bregan, Perin, Ekoss, Harlan, Edvik, and you, on the vision quest. If you are interested in being on that second team, step forward and follow me." He indicates each of you as he names you, before turning and opening a door leading off to the south.
