Grynth Shylok : Male Half-Orc Druid 5

The large half-orc druid shakes his head. "Unfortunately I know nothing of this White Rose. As I have stated, I am on a vision quest for Obad-Hai. I only know that to save our world from the Shadowmasters I must find this item. I know nothing of where it might be or what it might do." Then he gets a far off look as if thinking about something. "What have you heard about this item?"

Edvik begins drumming the fingers of his left hand against the leatherbound guard of the sword that hangs at his waist as he watches the gates for any more volunteers to step forward.

A few more individuals do come forward - the centuar, a woman with a greatsword, and several others - mostly humans, at least from what you can tell. Most keep to themselves, although the centuar approaches the woman and the two talk.

After a few moments, a man in the uniform of the castle guard leaves the castle and crosses the courtyard, weaving amoung those volunteers who have already entered to reach the gate. He waits a moment until the senechal finishes speaking with a man and waves him through before stepping forward and speaking quietly with the senechal for a few moments. On his part, the senechal looks unhappy with whatever the guard is telling him, but listens without comment until the guard finishes. The senechal shakes his head and gestures the other man back toward the castle before turning to meet the next would-be adventurer stepping up to the gate.

You guys seem to be RPing along fine, so I'll wait a bit longer before moving it along. :)

Perin Olhandle - Male Halfling Ranger 5

Perin's stare is swayed from the centaur by Ekoss' greeting, and he returns the nod with one of his own and an amiable smile. He doesn't entirely pay attention to the matter of the 'White Rose', his ear instead turned to what the centaur is saying to the woman with the sizeable sword. Still, he doesn't entirely miss the remarks of the human and the half-orc on the matter and mumbles to himself while his gaze quickly sweeps over the growing gathering, "I expect if it's all that important, it 'ought not be bandied about so casually in the courtyard here..."

OOC[sblock] May I request a listen check (+6) to try and overhear any part of the centaur and the human female with the greatsword's conversation, a spot check (or possibly a sense motive check) (+9 or +1 respectively) to see if anyone or anything (aside from Ekoss and the two half-orcs) seem to be having some visible reaction to the talk of the White Rose that might be taken for more than benign curiosity, and finally, a Knowledge Nature Check (+8) to determine if there are any natural objects or sites that Perin might know that might be a match to what is being talked about with the White Rose? Grun grunts at the druid and gives him a slow once-over with his eyes, frowning in particular at the incongruity of a half-orc druid, and one who pays homage to Obad-Hai, of all gods. Completely unaware of his own cultural alienness as a cleric of a dwarven god, Grun unabashedly stares at Grynth for long moments while the others mill about the courtyard.

Grynth Shylok : Male Half-Orc Druid 5

Grynth nods towards Perin's statement. "You are probably right, small one. Perhaps we should wait for a better time to discuss such things." Then the half-orc moves over to Molly who has decided to taunt Perin's riding dog. He grabs up the badger and shakes his head. "Now, Molly, is that anyway to make friends?" She simply grunts at him in response.

Edvik subconciously leans in closer to try and overhear the guard's comments to the senechal. As the guard leaves, he looks around, noting a fair number of the would be volunteers straining to catch the conversation as well.

He begins pacing the area slowly, gazing up at the castle while wondering what exactly is going on inside. He pauses behind the senechal a few paces, looking out over the man's shoulders to gauge the crowd outside. What was all this questioning for, anyways? Had anyone actually been turned away?

He briefly considers the congregation in one corner. Is it worth the effort to go and join their conversation? Who knows who he'll be assigned with, better to wait. With one more glance to the remaining volunteers, Edvik returns to his original position, turns on his heels to stare outwards again, and resume drumming his fingers on the guard of his sword.

As Gruns attention shifts to the other half-orc Bregan walks away from him to get a better view of the castle. Glancing once at the pacing warrior, he makes mental notes of the heights and distances of windows and other entrances. I can hide under that culvert, then climb to the second story...

His thoughts are interrupted by a badger playing with the halfings dog. Checking the warrior again, Bregan turns his gaze briefly to the centaur that has entered and then watches the other volunteers talk to the seneschal.

Listen check to overhear centaur & human female conversation: 18+6=24
They started out with a discussion on what the purpose of the 'special missions' might be; however, the centaur soon diverted the conversation and is unabashedly flirting with her. You do learn that her name is Evanelle, and the centaur's is Hector.

Spot check to see if anyone seems to be taking undue note to the mention of the White Rose: 9+9=18
Sense Motive check to notice the same: 11+1=12
It doesn't appear that anyone is listening, or taking undue note of, the half-orc's mention of the White Rose - beyond the senechal's initial reaction, of course. You do notice an unusual amount of crows and ravens perched on the castle walls, most of them staring down into the courtyard; but then again, a larger-than-normal number seem to call the city home. (Knowledge Nature Check 15+8=23) It's not necessarily normal, but not terribly unheard of during times of war. However, you still don't think they are acting quite as they should.

Knowledge Nature Check: 4+8=12
Nothing natural that you know of matches what the others have said about the White Rose.

Listen Check to overhear what the guard is whispering to the senechal: 8+2=11
You can't quite make it out; you only hear a few words over the talking of the others in the courtyard. "....just received....patrol found him....dead, we're not sure....is gone....proceed....?" At which point the senechal shakes his head and waves the other man back into the castle.

Listen Check to overhear what the guard is whispering to the senechal: 15+11=26
Your sharp hearing picks up the whispers over the talking of the others in the courtyard. "I just received word. A patrol found him less than an hour ago - he's dead, we're not sure what killed him. The parchment is gone. Should we proceed anyway?" At which point the senechal shakes his head and waves the other man back into the castle.

The questioning seems to be solely to give the senechal an initial idea of what the individuals can do - you think that perhaps he is judging those that put themselves forward, and on more than just their words. No one thus far has been turned away.

Only two more people volunteer before the senechal gestures to the guards to close the gates and turns back to you. "Everyone, follow me, please." He heads into the interior of the castle, leading you a short distance through a stone-walled corridor into a large room where three men in military uniform await, seated at the head of a large table. This looks to have once been a dining hall - perhaps for the lesser members of Court, as it doesn't seem large enough to seat the entirety of the nobility. Now, judging by the papers, reports and maps strewn about the table, it is the temporary war room.

The senechal walks toward the head of the table so that he stands not far from where the others sit and turns toward you. "As some of you may know, my name is Coel, and I am the King's senechal. He has put me, along with General Brandt," he gestures to one of the seated men, who then stands, "in charge of the war - at least on this front."

"We would like two main teams. In brief, one team will be doing reconnise of the enemy, working with the army, as well as protecting diplomatic missions to the other races and kingdoms. This group we would like to be highly mobile and ready for conflict. The other," his eyes flicker towards Grynth and those of you who had been in conversation with him, but he continues without pause, "will be searching out an artifact that we believe will help us in driving back the Shadowmasters, or at least turning the tide of the war. This may actually be the more dangerous of the two missions, as if they should learn of the artifact, we believe that they will stop at nothing to gain it. As such, it is highly confidential. I have tentatively chosen those that I believe would be best suited as a team for this second mission." He pauses and surveys the group.

"You, priest of Moradin, Bregan, Perin, Ekoss, Harlan, Edvik, and you, on the vision quest. If you are interested in being on that second team, step forward and follow me." He indicates each of you as he names you, before turning and opening a door leading off to the south.

Perin's expression seems to cloud as he listens to the centaur and the human's conversation, and he seems to seize almost gratefully on Grynth's words and his badger's... badgering of his dog. An astute observer would note he seems a touch flushed before addressing the half-orc. "Aww, don't worry, Sage is harmless. Unless of course he decides ta be otherwise, than he's a terror." He chuckles a little and steps a bit closer to observe the half-orc's badger, "Molly, eh? She's your companion?"

Perin stays close to Grynth as they are ushered inside the castle, and once inside he pipes up again before they enter the war room, "Those black birds outside, they aren't acting quite natural if'n you ask me. They're right smart birds and I'll wager they're trying to scavenge up more than trash or carrion out there."

Perin looks a little surprised that his name was called for the second team, but he smiles, evidently pleased with the assignment. He doesn't hesitate to step through the opened door.
