Searching for a Brutal, and Harsh Setting.

What about d20 Dragon Lords of Melnibone? <snip>

Just saw this go up.... Unless you have some serious free time and desire to basically create or correct a lot of notes from scratch this Book (emphasis on the specific book by Chaosium) isn't going to be of much use.
Even by the standards of D20 publications this book is riddled with typos and confused weird rules. I bought it when it first came out, all flushed to get my game on and well, its a disaster.

Ex:
To summon a Demon you must make a check vs. the character's power stat.... what is a power stat? they don't say. etc.
(apparently another game system Chaosium created uses power stats and they didn't proof-read when copying the magic system....)

You want it dark, dangerous and brutal ? You want an campaign that is chalanging and with drow and Gith ? There need to be all kinds of basic fantasy stuff in it as well?

Then I got the solution for you. Play Undermountain with a 1st level party and don't change the random encounters, etc. It will be a very dark campaign at the moment they run out of torches. It will be dangerous only by the random encounters (not even mentioning the planned ones) And FR is swarming with Gith and UM got a straight conection to the drow.

All you wished and even more, enjoy :)

No one has brought up Gothos---The Hunt: Rise of Evil setting by Mystic Eye Games, Ryan Dancey at the ENnies called it a "fan favorite", it can be dark and has a lot of books already out there with more coming....see the page for MEG in my sig below:D

Not to mention Bluffside is there right Hal? ;) Best city to date, I'm very willing to admit.

Hi-
I'm surprised nobody has mentioned Dungeon World from fast forward games.
This is an excellent setting for a harsh campaign world.

Scott

It could be a harsh campaign world but the initial release is more lke a book of encounters per say rather than a well laid out campaign.

I wasn't impressed by Dungeon World. It didn't have much to it, other than it might serve for a nice dungeon crawl.

Personally I felt Oathbound was better done, using a similar concept.

Conceptually, I think dungeon world is great... and much more than just a dungeon crawl. There's some room for some real bizarreness and some interesting roleplaying there. The execution lacks a little, though. But I've said that....
